Beloved: grace, mercy and peace be multiplied to you without measure from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord. I am pleased to welcome you to another week of this month. My prayer is that God will protect you in the week and throughout the remaining part of the year from every attack of the devil. Amen.
One of the things we are told in the bible about the devil is that he is our enemy. In other words, he is not our friend and should never be treated by us as a friend. Instead, we must continually be on our guard against him. Otherwise, he will mess up our lives.
Look at what Peter tells us about him:
“Be self-controlled and alert. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of sufferings.” (1Peter 5:8-9NIV)
Did you see that? Peter is telling us here that Satan is not just our enemy but also an active one. That is why he goes around like a roaring lion, frightening people and looking for someone to devour. How, then, are we to relate to him? First, we are to continually be on our guard against him. In other words, we are to continually watch out for any opportunity he may want to use against us, so that we will remove it.
See, Satan is ready to use any opportunity against us, if we allow him. He may use our relationships against us. He may use our possessions against us. He may also use our carelessness or laziness against us. It is on us, then, to quickly recognise when he is trying to use anyone or anything against us and to take steps to hinder him.
The second thing we are told by Peter to do is to resist the devil. In other words, we must learn to confront him and drive him away from our lives. And can we do that? Yes, we can. If we cannot drive the devil away from our lives, God will not tell us to do so. The reason He tells us to do so is that we can do so.
But how do we do so? Two things are involved! The first is to put our faith in our God and do whatever He tells us to do to drive the devil away from our lives. The second is to be steadfast in doing whatever God tells us to do in driving the devil away. In other words, we must keep on doing what He tells us to do until Satan runs away from us.
Now what is God telling us to do in order to drive Satan away from our lives, homes and communities? He is telling us to give ourselves to meditating on His word, to declaring it and to practising it. Also, He is telling us to give ourselves to praying without ceasing. Then He is telling us to take very seriously the fellowship of His people. And as we do these and do not faint, we will always be able to drive Satan away from us.
The third thing we are told by Peter in that bible text is that we must always remember that we are not the only ones being attacked by the devil. He is attacking other children of God like us as well. So, we must not think that the troubles coming to us are peculiar and give up. Instead, we should continue to resist the devil and his works in our lives. And we will always walk in victory over him.
Have a lovely week.
