Title: Eagerness for good works

Series: From Pastor’s desk
Number: Vol. 15, No. 25

Beloved: grace, mercy and peace be yours without measure from God our Father and Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. It is with great delight that I welcome you to another week of the month of October 2026. I pray that God will daily renew you in strength to faithfully carry out all the good works He has recreated you to do, so that you may have your reward from Him in full. Amen.

In Paul’s letter to the Ephesians, he says this to us:

“For we are his workmanship, having been created in Christ Jesus for good works that God prepared beforehand so we may do them.” (Eph 2:10NET)

What did God recreate us for, as we see in this bible text? He recreated us to do the good works that He prepared ahead of time for us to do. So, there are good works God will want each of us to do with our time here on earth. And do we know them? If we don’t know them, we must begin to pray to Him to daily fill our hearts with revelations about them, so that we may devote ourselves to doing them.

Why is this important? It is important because God will only reward us on the basis of the good works He has assigned to each of us. He will not reward us on the basis of the good works He has not assigned us to do. In fact, we can only meet with frustration and failure, if we should attempt to do any good work He has not assigned us to do. It is only those good works He has assigned us to do that we can expect to succeed at and be rewarded for. So, it is important that each of us know all the good works God will want him to do on a daily basis. That way, we can give ourselves to doing them.

But then, knowing the good works God will want us to do is not enough; we also have to be eager to do them. It is when we are eager to do the good works that He wants us to do that we will be motivated to study the Scriptures about them and to also pray to succeed at doing them. And one of the reasons God has purified us in Christ Jesus is that we may be eager to do good works. Look at what Paul says about this:

“He gave himself for us to set us free from every kind of lawlessness and to purify for himself a people who are truly his, who are eager to do good.” (Titus 2:14NET)

Did you see that? The purification work of the Spirit of God in our lives ought to take care of any form of indifference that may be in us towards doing the will of God. So, if you realize that you are not eager to serve God or to do good to others around you, or if you are always complaining or making excuses anytime you are called upon to do something good for others, it may be that you are stubbornly hindering the work of the Holy Spirit in you. That is because there is no way He will be fully at work in you and you will not always be eager to do any good work that God may call upon you to do, whether in your family, neighbourhood, school, office, church or anywhere you find yourself.

In any case, the point I am making is that it is only those who are eager to do good that the Spirit of God will find it easy to lead to do all the good works God will want them to do here on earth. If you, then, are lacking in eagerness to do good, you should begin to pray that the Spirit of God will rid your life of all forms of lack of enthusiasm to do good. That way, you too can be led to begin to do all the good works God will have you do before your time here on earth is done. And when you stand before Him in His eternal kingdom, great will be your reward.

Have a lovely week.
