Series: Fruit bearing

We are still dealing with ‘Fruit bearing’. And if you have not forgotten, we have placed our fingers on two things that we must be doing in order to draw from the fullness of Christ for our fruitfulness. First, we are to be meditating on His word. Second, we are to be devoted to prayer. How many of you still remember that? Jesus clearly tells us that apart from Him we can do nothing. That means we have to rely on Him solely for our fruitfulness. It is not for the believer to struggle to be fruitful. What the believer needs to do is to abide in his source, and his source is the Lord Jesus Christ. He is our source. He is the source of everything we need to be fruitful and productive. And if we are going to be fruitful and productive, we must abide in him.

But we need to know how to abide in Him. Otherwise, we will continue to struggle to be fruitful. And that’s why we have been looking at a number of things that Scriptures say about abiding in him. So, we talked about giving ourselves to His word, meditating on it. We also talked about praying as a means of drawing from Him, drawing the things that He has provided for our fruitfulness from Him, and, of course, as a way of expressing our dependence on Him.

Then we are looking at drawing from other believers. And that’s because we are members of the same body. As I told you, when we are talking about Christ, we are not talking about one person; we are talking about a body of people. And Paul shows us or illustrates what Christ represents for us using the human body. From what we see in the human body, every part of that body is dependent on the other parts of the body for functioning. There is no part of the body that is useless in its making or that is irrelevant in its making. A part of the body at some point can become useless, of course. But God did not make any part of the body to be useless. He made every part of the body to have something to contribute to the growth, development and welfare of the entire body. And all the other parts of the body must be drawing from each part for their functioning. Otherwise, they will be limited in one way or the other.

In the same way, we all as members of the body of Christ have one thing or the other to contribute to the overall growth, development and welfare of the entire body. And each of us must be devoted to contributing his own quota. The body of Christ, as we see in Scriptures, grows as each part does its work. So, every part of the body of Christ must be doing its own work. It must recognize the work or the works that the Lord will have it to do, and it must be devoted to doing it. Otherwise, the growth of the entire body of Christ will be limited.

So, if you are not functioning as you are meant to be functioning in the body of Christ, you are limiting all of us. That’s the truth. It may not look like you are limiting us. But the fact is that you are limiting us. None of us can grow to be all that God wants him to be without the proper functioning of every member of the body of Christ. Scriptures are very clear about that. And as I said before, even the one that may appear to be quite mature among us spiritually cannot attain the height of maturity that he can attain if other members of the body of Christ are not doing all that they are meant to be doing. So, don’t limit the body of Christ by making yourself irresponsible. God did not make you to be irresponsible. God did not make you to be useless. But you can make yourself useless to the body of Christ by not taking your place. I want to keep that in mind.

You may not understand the extent to which you are affecting the entire body of Christ if you are not doing what you are meant to be doing. But a day is coming when it will become clear to you that, all along, you have limited the body of Christ in its functioning, that you have limited the usefulness of the body of Christ through your own slothfulness, lukewarmness, or waywardness. You must keep that in mind.

Well then, It is one thing for all the other members of the body of Christ to be doing all that they are meant to do; it is another thing for each of us to learn to draw from them whatever it is that they have to offer us, so that we can be as fruitful as God wants us to be. Remember, there is a demand on every one of us to be fruitful and productive. And before we close this series, we will look at the dangers of not being fruitful. That is because there are dangers mentioned in Scriptures for not being fruitful and productive as God will have us be.

So, this is not something you should run away from. Of course, you may choose to run away from it. But you can’t choose to run away from it without dealing with the consequences as well. Anybody can choose to ignore the word of God. But you cannot choose not to embrace the consequences of ignoring His word. The moment you choose to ignore his word, you will have to deal with the consequences. You can’t run away from the consequences. God is not going to force you to act on His word. God is not going to force you to take Him seriously. You can choose any time not to take God seriously. But once you choose not to take Him seriously, the consequences will naturally follow. You won’t be able to run away from them.

In any case, there is a demand on us to be fruitful and productive. The things that are referred to in Scriptures as ‘The fruit of the Spirit’, we have a demand to exhibit these things in our lives. And as I pointed out to you in an earlier teaching, the demand is not on the leaders of the church alone; the demand is on all the children of God because all of us are members of the body of Christ. It’s not only our leaders in the church that are members of the body of Christ. All of us are members of the body of Christ. All of us are partakers of His divine nature. All of us have been anointed by Him. And you must keep that in mind.

Again, every child of God is anointed, anointed by the Spirit of God. We may have different roles in the body. And we do have different roles in the body. Our roles may not make our ministries obvious. It doesn’t mean that we are not anointed. It doesn’t mean that one of us is less anointed than the other. Each of us is anointed. Some people may be popular among us because of certain responsibilities God has given to them or because of certain gifts of the Spirit that God has given to them. They may be known better than others. It doesn’t mean that they are more anointed than others. All of us are anointed because the one who anoints people is the Spirit of God. And he has come to live in each of us by the same measure.

So, there is none of us that has more of the Spirit of God in him than the other. Are you following me? There is nobody that can claim to have more of the Spirit of God in him than another believer. Because the Spirit of God is not a thing. The Spirit of God is a person. The Spirit of God is not some fluid, such that when you fill a cup, you can fill it halfway, or you can fill it three quarters, or you can fill it to the full. The Spirit of God is a person. And He’s either living in you or He’s not living in you. If He’s living in you, then, He has come to live in you in all His fullness. If He’s not living in you, then, He is not living in you. But He’s fully present in everyone that is a believer. He is not more present in a believer than in another believer.

However, the Spirit of God may be more in control in a believer’s life than in another believer’s life. It depends on how yielded each believer is to Him. What I am saying is that what will make the presence of the Spirit of God more obvious in one believer than in another believer is their how yielded they are to Him. If this person is more yielded than that person, then, the presence of the Spirit of God will be more obvious in his life than in the other person’s life. So, you may think that this person has more of the Spirit of God than the other person. No! The Spirit of God is a person. And He lives in each of us by the same measure. But the more we yield ourselves to Him, the more He manifests Himself in us. Can you relate to that?

Well, we are saying that even though each of us has something to contribute to the overall welfare of the body of Christ, to the fruitfulness of every member of the body of Christ, all of us must learn to draw from one another so that we can be as fruitful as God wants us to be. How then do we do that? We already know that all of us are members of the same body and that there is none of us that is irrelevant, there is none of us that is not significant to the growth of the entire body. But if we don’t learn how to draw from each other, what each of us has to offer us will not automatically work for our good.

I am saying that the gifts of other believers will not automatically work for your good, if you don’t learn to draw from them. Their service in the kingdom will not automatically work for your good, if you don’t learn to draw from them. Whatever it is that God has blessed them with for your own fruitfulness will not automatically work for your fruitfulness, if you don’t learn to draw from them. So, we must learn to draw from one another.

One of the things we need to educate God’s people in, especially when they just become Christians, is the need to be drawing from other believers, not assuming that they can make it on their own. But how do we do that? We do so by fellowshipping with one another. And of course, that’s a word that we use all the time. But the problem is that most people don’t even know what it means. And because they don’t know what it means, they don’t know how to apply it in their own work. So, I will endeavor to break it down so that we all can get it.

See, it is easy for me to say you need to take fellowship with other believers seriously. But if I don’t break that down, you may not understand what I’m talking about or how to take that fellowship seriously. Or you may not even understand the dimensions of Christian fellowship. And you need to understand these things so that you can begin to take advantage of them for your own edification.

So, to begin with, you must take Christian meetings or congregational meetings very seriously. It is one of the ways you draw from other believers. And we’ve seen in Scriptures that believers of old took congregational meetings very seriously. In fact, we see in Scriptures that believers of old, in the early days of the church, met every day (Acts 2:46-47).

Now I’m not saying we have to meet every day for congregational meetings. But if we’re meeting every day for congregational meetings, nothing will be wrong with it. It depends on what we are doing in those meetings. I mean that if we have a system of meeting for congregational meetings every day, it is good.

Sadly, we’re in an age or a time in which people get bored easily. People don’t want to stay on anything they need to do for long. It’s hard to get people’s attention for long today. It’s a terrible thing. So, to make people listen to you share the word of God with them for 30 minutes is a hard thing today. Because we constantly want to be on the move. And that’s why we are crazy about comedy today. We just want something to make us laugh.
So, to get people’s attention for long on something that will edify them is a hard thing. And that’s why today, if we want to hold church meetings every day, people may not show up if they don’t have problems. If they don’t have problems driving them from pillar to post, they naturally wouldn’t want to show up in church meetings. Actually, if they can do without church meetings, they would do without them. And it’s a terrible thing.

But I’m saying that back in bible days, they took congregational meetings very seriously because they understood the relevance of doing so. They understood it to be one of the ways we draw from one another for our fruitfulness. Before I proceed on that, let me quickly give you a familiar Scripture. It is in Hebrews chapter 10, from verse 24, which says:

“And let us consider how we may spur one another toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another – and all the more as you see the Day approaching.” (Hebrews 10:24-25NIV)

We have instructions here about encouraging one another to be devoted to walking in love and doing good things. Then we are told not to give up meeting together, as some people are in the habit of doing. So, it’s not a new thing for people not to take church meetings seriously. Even in bible days, there were people that were in the habit of staying away from church meetings. It was a culture for them.

Now for one reason or the other, you may miss a church meeting. And you will not be happy to do so, if you understand the relevance of church meetings. You will wish you were in every meeting, if you understand the relevance of church meetings. But then, for one reason or the other, you may miss a meeting. And where you have to do that, you will do well to communicate those that should know.

But that’s not what we are dealing with here. What we are dealing with is a culture, a habit of staying away from church meetings. In other words, we will be able to quickly place our fingers on the number of times you show up in church meetings in a year. That is because you show up only when you like. Any day you wake up on the wrong side of the bed, you don’t show up. If, for one reason or the other, you just get moody about the time you’re supposed to go for a church meeting, you may not go. If a friend comes visiting about the time you’re supposed to go for a church meeting, you may not go. If there is just any reason for you not to show up in a church meeting, you will not show up. And that’s because you don’t understand what you stand to gain by attending church meetings.

Church meetings are not meetings you should be forced or pressured to attend. In fact, the fact that you are being forced or pressured to attend shows that you are not growing at all. It shows that something is wrong with your understanding of Christianity. What do you gain from church meetings? First, you gain spiritual knowledge.

Now there are things you may never know on your own, even if you are reading the bible every day for the next 100 years. But in church meetings, you can get to know those things. That is because there are people that are gifted by God to impart spiritual knowledge to others. And you can gain adequate knowledge of the will of God for yourself by attending church meetings and listening to such people.

Again, that is not automatic. And I need to say this in advance: It’s not every church meeting that you attend that will provide you the opportunity to gain spiritual knowledge or to increase in your knowledge of the will of God for yourself or in your knowledge of God. It depends also on what the meeting is set up to accomplish.

See, it is not every church meeting that is organized for edification. I will attempt not to rush this because I want all of us to gain a fair understanding of what I’m talking about. So, I’m going to say that again. It is not every church meeting that is organized for edification. As we see in scriptures, every church meeting is meant to be organized for edification. In 1 Corinthians, chapter 14, verse 26, Paul says this to us:

”What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up.” (NIV)

Is that in your Bible? What must be done in church meetings so that the church may be built up? Everything! It means that whatever is done in the church meeting must be geared towards edification. It also means that we don’t introduce into our meetings anything that will not build us up. If it is not going to build us up, it has no business showing up in our meetings.

You see why it is a problem to have comedians in church meetings? I think the tempo has gone down now. But there was a time, some years ago, that almost every mega church brought in comedians into their meetings. For what? To excite the brethren! The brethren were not excited. The brethren were bored. The meetings were boring to them. And they were looking for a way to excite them, since the Spirit of God could not excite them. So, they began bringing comedians to lighten up the mood.

Sadly, we still have people who are looking for excitement in the church today. I’m not saying people shouldn’t get excited in the church. Of course, people should get exalted in the church. If there is any place to get excited, it should be a church meeting, right? But what is that thing that will excite you? That’s the issue. What is the thing that will excite you in the church meeting?

Prayer ought to excite you. The word of God ought to excite you. Singing helps to excite you. But will those things excite you? That man of God said, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’” Why was he glad? It was because he knew that he was not going there in vain. He knew the relevance of going there. He knew that going there would transform his life, things would happen to him. So, he said, “I was glad when they said to me, ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’” (Cf. Psalm 122:1)

How many people are glad to come to church meetings today? How many are excited to come? Are you happy to come? Is your coming around is not just to fulfill all righteousness? See, it can be to fulfill all righteousness. It can be just something you do religiously. Yes, you should do it religiously, but it should be more than religion to you.

Well, what I’m saying is it’s not every church meeting that is organized for edification. But every church meeting is meant to be organized for edification. We are told in that text that we read that everything that is done in our church meetings must be for edification; every aspect of the meeting must be for edification. Otherwise, it is useless.

There are church meetings today that are organized for fundraising. I was listening to a man of God talk about a meeting that he was to attend. He eventually attended it, anyway. And he said that before he came in for the meeting, he had been told that he would raise money for them and that whatever amount of money that was raised would be shared at a ratio of 30 to 70. That’s 3 to 7. They had already told him how they would share the money. And he told them, “I don’t do such things.” But they were expecting him to do that for them, to raise money for them. How do you get people edified in such meetings? Such meetings are not organized for edification. They are organized to raise money for certain individuals.

In most of our churches today, we turn every meeting to a fundraising meeting. Even when there is a funeral, we still find a way to raise money. We will use people’s misery to raise money. Think about that. If you choose to celebrate your birthday with the brethren in some places today, it will be an opportunity for the church to raise money. It should not be a bad thing to celebrate your birthday with members of your Christian assembly. I mean, who should you celebrate your birthday with, if not members of your Christian assembly? But if that is going to become an occasion for fundraising, is that not a problem? Even when we are going to have a naming, preachers will still find a way to raise money for themselves. That’s a problem. And it’s clear that such meetings are not organized for edification.

There are equally meetings organized for storytelling and meetings organized to attack others, to attack other Christian assemblies, to attack politicians. I listen to some ministers and ask myself, “How do people get edified in these meetings?” That is because most of the sermons are focused on attacking somebody, abusing somebody. Yes, you may think you’re stirring up people’s souls, you’re stirring up their spirits to know what is going on around the world. But people can learn what is going on around the world just by sitting down and watching Channels Television or TVC or by going online to read news, right? Church meetings should not be places where we are commenting on news. We are not social commentators. And such church meetings are not organized for edification.

In any case. I’m saying that even though church meetings are meant to result in the edification of all those who attend, they will not automatically result in their edification. It depends on the focus of those who are organizing those meetings. So, before you start attending church meetings, you need to be certain that the meetings you’re attending are for edification.

Now you can attend church meetings for sentiments. And many believers are in the assemblies in which they have to take for sentimental reasons. They know they are not being edified. And I’m not saying those assemblies are the reason they are not being edified. There may be other reasons they are not being edified. But you have no business being in a place where you are not being edified. For any reason whatsoever, especially sentimental reasons, you have no business being in an assembly where you are not being edified.

So, in making a choice of what church meetings you attend, your focus must be on your own spiritual edification. Is this a meeting in which I will be edified? Is this meeting one in which I will gain spiritual knowledge? Because you’re supposed to draw God’s provision for you, for your growth, for your fruitfulness, for your increased usefulness through church meetings. And if a church meeting does not afford you the opportunity to do that, then, you need to stay away from it and find somewhere else to be.

When we started church meetings, I used to announce this while preaching: ”If you are not being edified through these meetings, stop coming to them.” And I’m still saying it today: If you have not been edified in these meetings, stop coming. It’s not by force. You see, it’s not by force. Your edification should be important to you. Your spiritual growth should be important to you. If it is not important to other people, it should be important to you. What becomes of your life ultimately should be important to you. The direction that your life is going should be important to you. And if you can see that by your association with certain individuals, your life is not going in the direction that it should be going, stop associating with them. You did not come into this world together. It’s here that you met them, right…

Series: Fruit Bearing

This morning, we want to continue looking at ‘Fruit bearing’. And I want to further show us how to draw from the fullness of Christ, so that we may be able to bring forth the fruit of the Spirit as God expects us to do. We have already looked at the need for us to give ourselves to meditating on the Word of God as a way of drawing from the fullness of Christ and actually abiding in Him. We also looked at the role or the roles that prayer has to play in abiding in Christ, so that we may draw from Him everything that we need to bring forth fruit as He wants us to bring forth fruit.

Then I began to say that we also must take Christian fellowship seriously, if we’ll be able to fully take advantage of God’s provisions for us to bring forth fruit as He wants. Why is that important? It is important because we all are members of the same body. That being the case, we all are members of one another. That means each of us has something to contribute to the overall growth, development and welfare of other members of the body of Christ. In other words, you cannot become all that God wants you to be, if you will not take adequate advantage of what other members of the body of Christ have to supply for your growth, development and welfare in your walk with God. It is not hard; it is impossible. It is impossible because the word of God makes it abundantly clear that every member of the body of Christ has something unique to contribute to the overall growth of the entire body.

I may dwell a little on this part because it is one of the things that many of us who are believers don’t take seriously. We don’t take Christian fellowship as seriously as we should. We may think that we are taking it as seriously as we should. But the truth of the matter is that we don’t take it as seriously as we should. If we consider all that is said in Scriptures about what our attitude ought to be towards Christian fellowship, we will agree that most of us are not taking adequate advantage of it. We are not taking adequate advantage of it because we are not taking it seriously, as seriously as we ought to take it.

Let me just read something to you very quickly from 1 Corinthians 12. We are reading from this passage last week, but we really couldn’t get into some parts of the passage. So, I will read to you again from verse 12 straight into the part that I want you to pay attention to. It says:

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body – whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free – and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.” (1Corinthians 12:12-20NIV)

What is Paul describing here for us? The body of Christ! And we are the body of Christ, as we have seen in Scriptures. All of us, all of us who have been born again, all of us who have been recreated by the Spirit of God, form the body of Christ. As I told you last week, Jesus is not the only one that we can properly refer to as Christ. Because Christ is not one person. Christ is a body of people. Christ is a body of persons. That’s what we are told in scriptures. Jesus is the head of that body. And all of us who have come to be in Him are members of that body. So then, none of us should underestimate the roles that he can play in the overall growth, development and welfare of the entire body of Christ.

Now, regardless of how unknown you may be in the church, as far as God is concerned, if you are one of His children, you are not irrelevant. You are not insignificant. Don’t miss my point. The fact that each member of the body of Christ is unique and is relevant to the overall growth, welfare and development of the body does not mean that at the moment each member of the body of Christ is actually contributing as much as he can be contributing to the growth, development and welfare of the body. In the eye of God, you are relevant. In the eye of God, you are important. And there are things that He has deposited in you for the body. He has deposited those things in you so that as you use them or utilize them to contribute to the fruitfulness and usefulness of the other members of the body of Christ.

And of course, as you take the doing of that seriously, God will continue to give you more and more abilities so that you too can increase in usefulness in the body of Christ. But you may not be doing that. In fact, instead of contributing to the growth of other members of the body of Christ, you may be hurting them. You may be limiting them. You may be hindering them. You may be making yourself useless, useless to God and useless to the body of Christ. That’s not how it is meant to be. But it can be like that.

So, here Paul is telling us that you cannot say because you are not a pastor you are useless or that you are unimportant. You cannot say that because you are not an evangelist or because you don’t have certain spiritual gifts you are unimportant to the body of Christ. You are not unimportant. You are important. God has made you what you are. Paul talks about it. He says God has arranged the members of the body of Christ and put everyone where He wants him to be, just as He has done to our body.

I am sure you know that the one who arranged all the parts of our body was God. It was He that put the eyes where they are. It was God that put the ears where they are and so forth. In like manner, in the body of Christ, each of us has been placed where he should be. And what is important is for you to recognize where God has placed you and function right there. You don’t try to do what God has not made you fit to do. You don’t try to occupy a position that He has not placed you. Your fruitfulness will come from remaining where He has placed you.

Well, we are saying that each of us is important; each of us has something to contribute to the fruitfulness of all the other members of the body of Christ. And we may not be able to tell to what extent we are doing this. But each of us is important in the sight of God and can contribute immensely to the overall fruitfulness of all the members of the body of Christ all around the world.

So, don’t underestimate your relevance. Don’t underestimate your impact, whether positively or negatively. What you are doing, good or bad, is impacting on the entire body of Christ all over the world. You may not know that. But it is the truth. What you are doing in your little corner is affecting the entire body of Christ all over this town, all over this state, all over this country and all over the world.

How people view you as a member of the body of Christ will determine how they are going to view other believers. If they see you as saucy or as irresponsible, they will unconsciously view other believers in the same manner. If you are wicked and cruel to them, maybe in your workplace or in your neighborhood, if another believer moves into that neighborhood, they will first of all be careful of how they relate to that person. That is because you have shown them something negative about Christianity.

So, don’t think that you are not affecting anybody. I’m telling you, you are more influential than you think you are. You are affecting more people than you think you are. As unknown as you may be in this world, you are more influential than you think you are. And a day is coming when God is going to make that clear to you. God will show you the kind of impact you have made on your world, positively or negatively. You need to keep that in mind.

Then, from verse 21, 1 Corinthians 12, Paul says,

“The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.” (1Corinthians 12:21-27NIV)

Now let me take you back to where I started. Paul says no part of the body can say to the other part of the body, “I don’t need you.” Of course, again, we need to deal with this in a balanced way. A part of the body may be doing more harm to the body than good. A part of the body may not be playing the roles that it is meant to be playing in the body. And that will be because it is diseased, alright? And if it cannot be cured, at a point, the entire body may cooperate to have it removed. Do you understand?

But on a good day, there is no part of the body that can say or that will want to say, “I don’t need another part of the body.” The eyes cannot say, “I do not need the hands.” The legs cannot say, “I do not need a hands,” or “I do not need the ears.” The legs may be fast. But the legs still need the ears. Because if the ears are not good, the legs cannot make a good athlete. If the ears are not good, even though the legs are fast, the body will still underperform. When they say, “On your mark,” and the man doesn’t hear it, he is in trouble already. What do you think? Or when they say, “Go,” and he is still waiting, will he not lose? Yes, his legs are fast, but he may lose because his ears are bad.

So, on a good day, there is no part of the body that will say to the other part of the body, “I don’t need you.” Because they all need one another. And Paul is saying this so that we will begin to labor to maintain the unity that is already in the body of Christ. Now what I am dealing with, of course, this morning is not the unity in the body of Christ or the need for us to maintain the unity in the body of Christ. What I am dealing with is the need for us to learn to draw from other believers what God has given to them for our fruitfulness. And when we do not do that consciously, if we do not appreciate the fact that we all are members of the same body and that all these other members of the body of Christ with us have something to contribute to our increase in fruitfulness on a daily basis, we will not be as fruitful as we can be.

I cannot say, then, “I don’t need you, get out.” No! I need you. However, I can’t force you to stay. Do you understand? Even though I need you, I cannot force you to contribute to my growth. If I observe that instead of contributing to my growth, you are weakening me in the spirit or trying to pollute me, what will I do? I will stay away from you.

Now I am not staying away from you because I think I do not need you. I am staying away from you because you are diseased, because you are sick and I don’t want to contact the sickness in your life. But while away from you, it will be my duty to be praying for you that you will be well spiritually. That is because I still need you. Can you relate to what I am talking about?

Well, Paul has painted this graphically for us using the body, the human body. Every one of us is important. Every one of us has something to contribute to the overall growth and development of the other members of the body of Christ. And God wants each of us to have equal concern for the others. As I’m concerned about your growth and development, you ought to be concerned about my growth and development. As I’m concerned about your welfare, you ought to be concerned about my welfare.

Now Paul is telling us this so that we don’t think that the growth of the body of Christ is hinged on the activities of our spiritual leaders alone. And I believe that’s one of the things that has been limiting us in the church all over the world. We think, we erroneously think that our growth, that our development, that our welfare, that our usefulness is hinged only on the activities of our spiritual leaders. They are the ones that need to be on top of their games. They are the ones that need to be spiritual. They are the ones that need to be living holy lives. They are the ones that need to be living righteous lives. We think we have no business living right, bearing fruit. But that’s wrong thinking. And that’s why we have remained in spiritual infancy for centuries.

What the Word of God teaches us is that each member should have equal concern for the others. What the Word of God teaches us is that each member has something to contribute to the overall growth, development, and welfare of the others. But I think that those of us who are church leaders also have not done well enough in emphasizing this for the brethren. So, they erroneously think that we are the ones that should be living right. They don’t need to live right. Is that what we are told in scriptures? No!

Everybody should be walking in love. Every one of us should be patient, humble, gentle, self-controlled and generous. But what we see, on the contrary, is that when a demand is made on the believer to be humble or gentle, his response may be, “Am I a pastor?” Or when a demand is made on him to be regular in church meetings, his response may be, “Am I a church leader?” Or when he’s told you ought to be living a holy life, he may say, “Why do I have to be living a holy life? Am I a pastor? Am I an evangelist?”

But the Word of God says, “Be holy, just as I’m holy.” Who does He say that to? Every one of us! When He speaks about bringing forth the fruit of the Spirit, who is He talking to? Every one of us! But many of us see ourselves as not important enough in the body. But that’s not how God views us. And we need to begin to see ourselves as God sees us. So that we can begin to function as He wants us to function.

Let me give you a similar passage from Ephesians chapter 4. From verse 11, Paul says,

“So Christ himself gave the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, the pastors and teachers, to equip his people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ. Then we will no longer be infants, tossed back and forth by the waves, and blown here and there by every wind of teaching and by the cunning and craftiness of people in their deceitful scheming. Instead, speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of him who is the head, that is, Christ. From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” (Ephesians 4:11-16NIV)

I’m going to summarize this. Here, Paul shows us the reasons, the main reasons God has given us leadership in the church. And the first is that all of us may be equipped for works of service. In other words, all of us have things to do in the body of Christ. There is none of us that does not have things to do in the body of Christ. There are works that God wants each of us to be doing. You may not be doing them. And if you are not doing them, you are limiting us. It’s as simple as that. And it’s not just this assembly that you are limiting; you are limiting all the people of God all around the world. So, in a sense, you have become a problem to our group. You may not understand that. But that is the truth.

In the same book, Ephesians, Paul says we all are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do those good works that God has prepared in advance for us to do. There are good works that God has prepared in advance for every one of us to do. And you know, from time to time, I pray that God will open my eyes to see those good works that He wants me to do, so that I can give myself to doing them. And you know why that is important? It is important because when God is going to judge me, He is going to judge me on the basis of what He wants me to do, not on the basis of what the things that I am doing.

Just think about it. If you are answering questions not meant for you in the examination, is that not a terrible business? It does not matter how much time you spend answering questions that are not meant for you in an examination setting, even if you get everything right, what will you get at the end of the day? Zero! You are going to get zero at the end of the day because you have answered the wrong questions. One or two of my kids experienced this on some occasions. They answered wrong homework questions. And though they got the questions right, they still go zero. Why? They answered the wrong questions.

Well, I was talking about the fact that there are works for all of us, children of God. There are things God wants each of us to be doing. And we must emphasize this enough to all the children of God, so that they will stop wasting their lives, so that they will stop wasting the grace of God that is available to them. We have been taught not to take the grace of God in vain. But many of us are taking the grace of God in vain because we are not doing the things expected of us. And one of the jobs of our church leaders is to bring us to that point where we recognize the works that God wants us to be doing and then give ourselves to doing them.

The second reason we have leaders appointed over us in the church is to lead us to maturity in Christ, to bring us to that point where we are like Christ in every way. In other words, they are to lead us to that point where we are bringing forth all the fruit that Christ Jesus bore when He was here on earth. God wants to see in manifestation in our lives too the things that made Jesus’ life adorable. He wants to see in manifestation in our own lives too the things that made people want to be around Him. And He refers to these things as the fruit of the Spirit.

Now we have church leaders given to help us so that all of us can come to that point where we are bringing forth the fruit of the Spirit in abundance. That’s when we can say that we are mature in Christ. Christian maturity has to do with bringing forth in abundance, the fruit of the Spirit. It has nothing to do with how long you have been in the church. It has nothing to do with how long you have been born again. It has to do with how much of the fruit of the Spirit is evident in your life. If the fruit of the Spirit is not evident in your life, then you are not growing. It’s as simple as that. You are immature.

You may have gifts of the Spirit. The Bible makes these distinctions clear. There are gifts of the Spirit. You must not misrepresent them for the fruit of the Spirit. Gifts are gifts. They are given to us freely. And they have their own roles in Christian development. But they are gifts. We don’t do anything to have them. They are just given to us. But we can have them and still be spiritually redundant. We can have them and still be spiritually immature.

Paul gives us an example in the Corinthians. In 1 Corinthians 1, he says to the Corinthians, “There is no gift of the Spirit that is lacking among you.” That means all the gifts of the Spirit that you can possibly place your fingers on are in expression in that church, the Corinthian church. Then, in chapter 3, he says, “I cannot refer to you as spiritual, but as mere babes in Christ.” Yet they have all the gifts of the Spirit.

What’s the problem? Well, Paul says, “There is envy among you. There is jealousy among you. There is division among you. There is bitterness among you. There are lawsuits among you. There is sexual immorality among you. How can I refer to you as spiritual? How can I refer to you as mature?” Now he is not saying they are not children of God. No! They are children of God, but they are not mature. They speak in tongues. In fact, tongues at some point became a problem among them. Tongue talking became a problem in the church of the Corinthians. That was because there were people who were preaching in tongues among them. So, it became a problem. Why did it become a problem? It became a problem because they were immature.

There are many assemblies today in which spiritual gifts have become a problem. One of the reasons some churches are divided is the operation of spiritual gifts. They have so many who are spiritually gifted and they don’t know how to manage themselves. So, they are divided. Nobody is listening to nobody. Everybody is doing as he pleases because all of them are gifted. And everyone is boasting about his own gift. What is that telling you? They are immature. They are babies in Christ. That’s the point. They may not want to hear it, but that is the truth.

If you’re growing, if you’re maturing, you’re going to be bringing forth the fruit of love, of gentleness, of patience, of self-control, of humility, of brotherly kindness. And no wonder Paul says you must prioritize love over every other gift. You have to take it more seriously than your possession of any other gift of the Spirit. Because without your possession of it, or your expression of it, you’re going to make a waste of the gift of the Spirit that you have. Your gift of the Spirit will not bless the church. On the contrary, it will be hurting the church.

Well, in the passage I just read to you from Ephesians 4, Paul is showing us that the leaders given to us have been given to us to lead us to that point where all of us recognize our works, the works God wants us to be doing and give ourselves to doing them, and also to where all of us are bringing forth the fruit of the Spirit in abundance so that we all can be like Christ in every way. And lastly, in verse 16, he says:

“From him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work.” (Ephesians 4:16NIV)

Already, in this same passage, he refers to Jesus as the head of the body of Christ. And now he tells us that from Him the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows. So, all of us draw from Him to grow. Can you relate to that?

Then he says the body is building itself up in love. How? As each part does its work! So, we can only grow and develop to the point or to the degree to which each member of the body of Christ is doing what God wants him to do. That’s the point he’s making. The body of Christ will only mature to the degree that each member of that body is doing what it is meant to be doing. That means if each member of the body of Christ is not doing what it is meant to be doing, the overall growth of the body of Christ will be affected.

That’s why I say you may think of yourself as unimportant. But the day is coming when you will know how important you are. When God places before you all the things that He expects you to do for His body, for the growth of His body, when He lays these things before you and you begin to see them, you’re going to be asking, ”And you expect me to do all this?” And he’s going to say, “Yes! But instead of doing all this, look at all that you were doing. Instead of blessing the body, you were hurting the body.”

So, whether you are neglecting your work or ignoring your work, you are hurting the body, you are limiting the body. That is because the church of God cannot grow as it should grow until you begin to do what you’re meant to be doing. I cannot know all that I’m supposed to know or be all that I’m supposed to be, even as a pastor, until each of you is doing what he is meant to be doing in the body of Christ. And the question for you this morning is, “Are you contributing to the growth, welfare, usefulness and increase in fruitfulness of the body of Christ? Or are you limiting the body?”

Let us pray.

The fruit of the Spirit

Title: Fellowship (a)|Fruit bearing 9

Download

This morning, we want to continue from where we left off on ‘Fruit bearing’. We have been looking at what Scripture says about God’s desire for us to be bearing fruit, fruit of the Spirit. And for us to bear fruit as He wants, Jesus says that we must abide in Him. He describes our relationship with Him as that of the vine and the branches. Now for branches to bring forth fruit, they must abide in the tree that they belong to. Otherwise, they would not be able to bring forth fruit. Bearing fruit for any branch is supposed to come naturally. It is not something it should struggle to do. And it will not struggle to do it, if it remains in the vine or in the tree, whatever tree it may be, that it belongs to. In like manner, we must abide in the Lord Jesus Christ in order for us to continually bring forth the kind of fruit He wants us to bring forth and to bring it forth abundantly.

Then I proceeded to show you how to abide in Him. The first thing I mentioned had to do with meditating on His word. We must remain in His word. We must allow His word to remain in us. If we allow His word to remain in us, then, we are going to remain in Him. That involves meditating on His word. It’s not a one-off thing, as I pointed out. It’s something we must continually do. It’s something we must give ourselves to doing every day.

Then I talked about prayer. We must give ourselves to prayer. We have all kinds of Scriptures that point to the fact that we must give ourselves to prayer every day. Why is that important? It is important because prayer is one of the ways we express our dependence on God. It’s one of the ways we show that it is He that we are counting on for everything that we need. Then prayer is one of the ways we receive from God what He has provided. It’s one of the ways we draw from Him what He has freely provided for us.

There are things that God has freely provided for us as we are shown in scriptures. In 1 Corinthians 2, verse 12, we are told that one of the reasons we are given the Holy Spirit is that He may make us understand those things that God has freely given to us. The things God has freely given to us are for our growth. They are for our fruitfulness. It’s the job of the Spirit, then, to make these things known to us. But it doesn’t end there. We also must make efforts to take advantage of these things. One of the ways we take advantage of these things is through prayer. When we pray, we are able to take advantage of what God has provided for us. So, whatever it is that you need to bring forth the kind of fruit God wants you to bring forth, you can receive it from God through prayer.

There is, then, no excuse for any child of God not to bring forth abundant fruit of the Spirit. There is no excuse. If we would learn to meditate on the Word of God and to also pray, we would be able to take advantage of all of God’s provisions for us to be the kind of people He wants us to be. Keep that in mind.

Another way to abide in Him – because we are looking at abiding in Him so that we can bring forth the kind of fruit He wants us to bring forth –  is to stay in fellowship with His people. Now this may not make sense to anyone that is not given to Scriptures. And you may not see how staying in fellowship with other people of God equals abiding in the Lord Jesus Christ. But Scriptures show us that one of the ways we abide in Him is by staying in fellowship with other believers, especially those of our local assembly.

Why is this so? It is so because we are plainly told in Scriptures that we all are members of the same body, that is the body of Christ. Look at Romans chapter 12, from verse 4:

“For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.” (Romans 12:4-5NIV)

Here, believers are referred to as the body of Christ. And we are told that just as a body has many members, so in Christ, though we are many, form one body. In other words, in Christ Jesus, all of us form one body. And then it goes on to say, “Each member belongs to all the others.” And that’s how things are with our bodies. Each member of your body belongs to all the other members. Each part of your body is a member of all the other parts of the body. That means there is no member of your body that can exist by itself. It has to remain with other members of the body, with other parts of the body for it to exist. Otherwise, it will not exist at all.

Now a member or a part of any body that is going to exist on its own is going to be a severed part of that body. And once it is severed from that body, it is dead. That’s plain and simple. We have had people whose certain parts of their bodies were amputated or severed. Can we still say those parts of their bodies are still members or are still parts of their bodies? No! Or would they keep those parts of their bodies that were severed somewhere? No! The moment they were severed, they would begin to disintegrate; they would begin to smell and give off bad odors. So, nobody was going to keep those severed members with them. They would have to get rid of them.

I am saying that to just let you understand that there is no part of our bodies that is self-existent or that can exist on its own. It has to remain in the body. It has to remain a part of the other parts of the body. So, each part of our body has something to contribute to the growth, development and welfare of the entire body. It doesn’t matter how small that part is. It has something to contribute to the growth, development and welfare of the entire body. There is no part of the body that is there by mistake or that is there by accident. There is no part of our body that is useless. We may not know its function, but there is no part of our body that is useless. Every part of our body has its own functions. And interestingly, there is no other part of the body that can carry out the functions of another part of the body the way that part of the body can carry it out.

Yes, for one reason or the other, we may be able to do without a certain part of our body. We don’t pray that will happen to us. There are people that have had to do away with certain parts of their bodies. They did that reluctantly. They did that because it was going to ultimately save them, save the other members of the body. But they did so reluctantly. And that’s because there is no part of the body that is useless. And once a part of the body is not there again, the body cannot function as well as it is meant to function again – its functions become limited.

It’s not a mistake, then, that our body is used to explain how the body of Christ operates. It’s not a mistake at all. It is just to make us appreciate the fact that we all belong to one another. And because we all belong to one another, we all have something to contribute to the overall growth and development and welfare of the entire body of Christ.

As I said before, each part of the body has something that it is contributing to the growth, development and welfare of the entire body. So, it means for the body to be what it is meant to be, all the parts of the body must draw whatever each part of the body has to offer or deliver. They must draw from it. They must take advantage of it.

The entire body relies on the eyes to see, right? And the entire body relies on the ears to hear what is happening around. Is that not correct? The moment the body, however, begins to ignore what the eyes are seeing, what happens? It gets into trouble. The moment the body ignores what the ears are seeing, what’s going to happen? It’s going to get into trouble.

Now these things happen in our body all the time, even though we are not paying attention to them. All the parts of our body are cooperating for us to survive, even though we are not paying attention to that. In like manner, all the members of the body of Christ must cooperate for us to be all that God wants us to be. The point I’m making is that there is no way any of us can bear fruit the way God wants them to bear, if he is not going to draw from other members of the body of Christ. It is not possible. Each member of the body of Christ has something to offer for you to be as fruitful as God wants you to be.

See, it does not matter what level of spiritual growth you have attained. It doesn’t matter how well-known you are in the body of Christ or how highly respected you are in the body of Christ. The truth of the matter is that each member of the body of Christ has something to contribute to your growth and development, to your welfare, to your fruitfulness. And if all the other parts of the body of Christ are not contributing what they are meant to be contributing to your growth and development and welfare, you will not be as fruitful as God wants you to be. It’s a simple fact.

And what it means is that even the one among us Christians that we can refer to as the most mature, if we can use that language, can still not be said to have become as mature as he can be, as long as other members of the body of Christ are not contributing all that they are meant to be contributing to his growth and development. Can you relate to what I’m talking about? What I’m saying is that there are many of us that would have become better believers, if other members of the body of Christ have been contributing what they are meant to be contributing to our lives. And many of us would have been more fruitful than we are right now if we are consciously drawing what other members of the body of Christ have to contribute to our growth and development. We need to understand this so that we can begin to make a conscious effort to draw from one another whatever it is that God will want us to draw from one another for our growth, for our development and for our fruitfulness.

This is one of the reasons those who don’t take Christian fellowship seriously cannot grow as they are meant to grow in the body of Christ. They can’t develop as God expects them to develop. They cannot mature in the things of God as God expects them to mature. They may have an appearance of godliness, an appearance of holiness. They may appear to be doing well in the faith. But the truth of the matter is that they are not doing well in the faith. If you go close to them, and you watch their lives, you will see that they are not doing well in the faith as they are meant to be doing or as they can be doing.

Yes, you may say, “I can study Scriptures on my own and meditate on the word of God on my own.” That’s fine. You can and you should be doing that. You can say, “I can pray on my own and get answers from God.” Yes, you can and you should be doing that because the word of God commands you to be doing that. But I’m saying that it is not enough for you to be as fruitful as God wants you to be.

That’s because when you got born again, you got born again into a body. And you cannot be all that God wants you to be without that body. You cannot. It’s not like it is hard for you to be all that God wants you to be without that body. It is impossible for you to be all that God wants you to be without that body. But you will have to learn to make the most of what other members of the body of Christ have to offer you for your growth, development, welfare and fruitfulness in Christ Jesus.

Now Paul says something similar to this in 1 Corinthians 12, from verse 12. Look at it:

“Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body – whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free – and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.” (1Corinthians 12:12-13NIV)

What Paul is talking about here is the body of Christ. And he’s telling us that Christ is not one person; Christ is a body of people. That’s something that you need to pay attention to as a child of God, so that you may know how God views you and where you belong and make the most of your position in the family of God.

Well, Christ is not one person; Christ is a body of people. When we talk about Jesus Christ, Jesus is a person. Jesus is the anointed one. And what we are told in Scriptures is that He is the head, the head of the body of Christ, you see? But I’m saying Jesus is just one person. And if He is the head of the body, that means that body has members, that body has parts. So, every member of that body can be properly referred to as Christ. That’s because the head alone doesn’t make the body.

The head must have a body, alright? Since Jesus, then, is referred to as the head of the body of Christ, it means He is not the only one we can properly refer to as Christ. All the people that make up that body that He is head over are also Christ. And that is why it also says that we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body. We are all brought together by the same Spirit to form one body. So, we all are members of the body of Christ. He is the head. We are the body. So, we are jointly united; we are jointly connected.

Before we go further here, let me read to you from Ephesians chapter 1, from verse 22. Speaking about Jesus, Paul says:

“And God placed all things under his feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” (Ephesians 1:22-23NIV)

God has placed everything under the feet of who? The feet of Jesus! And then He appointed him to be head over who? Over the church! He has been appointed to be head over us. Paul goes on to say that we are His body. So just as we can refer to Him as Christ, and we should refer to Him as Christ because He is Christ, we also can be referred to as Christ.

Now that may appear strange to the religious mind. So, we may not want to bother the religious mind about that. Because if you say to a religious man, “I am Christ,” it is going to bother him. It is going to disturb him. And he will want to drag things with you. And you don’t need to get involved in any kind of quarrel with anybody. It is not necessary. But you should know that for yourself, that you are Christ. It should be personal knowledge to you.

Think about this: If you are looking for someone, and maybe the person is probably looking over somewhere or bending somewhere, so that you can’t see the person’s head but just the body, you are not going to say, “Oh, that is Joshua’s body.” What are you going to say? That is Joshua! Is that not what you will say? That is what you are going to say. Someone will have to be dead for you to say that is his body. If the person is alive, you are not going to say that is his body. You are going to say that is him. Right? If you are pursuing a thief, and they cannot see his face, but they can see him running somewhere, what are they going to say? They are not going to say that is his body. Rather, they are going to say that is him.

So, we can properly refer to ourselves, all of us who are in Christ Jesus, as Christ. That is because Paul tells us in this text that Christ is the head and we are his body. He even does better in explaining this to us. He refers to us as the fullness of him. Look at it, verse 22 again: “…which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way.” Who are the fullness of Christ? We are the fullness of Christ. We are His completeness. We complete Christ. That’s the point. And that is because it is the same Spirit that has made Jesus Christ that has also made us Christ. It is the same spirit that gave birth to Jesus that has given birth to us. We have not been born by a different Spirit. We have been born by the same Spirit. We have been recreated by the same Spirit.

Now that’s what Paul is talking about in 1 Corinthians 12. He says by the same Spirit we all have been made or baptized to form one body. So together we make one body. That’s the kind of relationship we have with one another. We are members of one another. And we must keep this in mind, that we are members of one another and that each of us has something to contribute to the growth, welfare, development and fruitfulness of the others. No, we may not have learned enough about how to do this. But each of us is in that position, placed there by God to be able to contribute to the overall growth, development, welfare and fruitfulness of the entire body of Christ.

I really won’t be able to finish up with this this morning. But then, I should say this in advance: the fact that we are saying this, that each of us has something to contribute to the overall welfare, usefulness and fruitfulness of the entire body of Christ, does not mean that everyone that refers to himself as a Christian is able to do the same thing. Because as I’m pressing this further, I am going to show you how each of us is able to contribute to the fruitfulness of the others. That means we must be in proper fellowship with one another for that to happen. It means we must respect one another. It means we must take one another seriously. It means we must relate to one another in unity for that to happen.

But then, we are warned in Scriptures that there are certain individuals that refer to themselves as believers that we must stay away from. So, while I’m saying this, I must also let you know that it’s not every believer or every so-called believer that has something to contribute to your growth or that has something to contribute to your fruitfulness. It is not everyone that refers to himself or herself as a believer that you will interact with and your life will become better.

In 1 Corinthians chapter 5, from verse 9, Paul says:

“I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people – not at all meaning the people of this world who are immoral, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters. In that case, you will have to leave this world. But now I’m writing to you that you must not associate with anyone who claims to be a brother or sister but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or slanderer, a drunkard or swindler. Do not even eat with such people.” (1Corinthians 5:9-11NIV)

Look at what Paul is saying here. He says, “I wrote to you in my letter.” What letter? We do not have that letter. So, evidently, there was a letter before what we’re referring to now as 1Corinthians. Paul had written them a letter before he wrote this one. And in that letter, he told them not to associate with sexually immoral people. Now he is clarifying for them those that he’s actually referring to, those that he’s saying they must not associate with. And he’s saying that I’m not referring to those of this world who are sexually immoral or who are swindlers or who are idolaters. In that case, you will have to leave this world.

So, when the word of God says do not associate with sexually immoral people, with those who are greedy, with those who are involved in idolatry, it’s not essentially referring to those of this world who are unbelievers. We cannot run away from such people. They are all around us. Some of them are our family members. Some of them are our neighbors. Some of them are our colleagues at work or in school. We buy things from them in the market. And you can’t make certain choices about whether you’re going to relate to them or not relate to them. No, you can’t run away from relating to them. You just have to relate to them. Otherwise, you will need to leave the world. You can’t insist that the person that is going to sell pepper to you in the market must be a Christian. You are not going to eat at all if you want to do that. You can’t insist that the motorcyclist that is going to carry you must be a Christian. You will soon wear yourself out if you want to do that. If you want to rent a house, you can’t insist that the landlord must be a believer. You may not get a house to rent if you want to do that.

The point we are making is that we cannot totally avoid relating to those of this world simply because they are immoral or greedy or wicked. For one reason or the other, we will need to keep on relating to them. Of course, we are told how to relate to them in Scripture. So, don’t miss my point. We are given sufficient instructions in Scriptures on how to relate to such individuals as well. But we are not told in Scriptures not to associate with them at all. If we want to do that, we will probably need to leave the world. Not only that, we will not be able to affect them with the Word of God. So, take note of that.

But the people I am referring to are those who refer to themselves as believers, those who refer to themselves as believers but who are sexually immoral or greedy, who are involved in adultery, who are swindlers. We are told not to associate with them. We are told not even to eat with them. Why? They have nothing to contribute to your growth. They are not going to help your faith. On the contrary, they may ruin your faith. They may pollute your life and destroy the good work that God is doing in you. So, Paul says, “Do not associate with such individuals.”

You can see that we already have a clear instruction about this. And that is not to say we are to hate them. It is not to say that we are to abuse them. But it’s just to let them know that the kind of Christianity they are practicing is not the one we are called to practice in Scriptures. So, you must stay away from them.

Also, from 2 Timothy chapter 3, verse 1, Paul says this:

“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money,

boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God – having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.” (2Timothy 3:1-5NIV)

Again, is Paul referring to unbelievers here? No! I used to think, growing up as a believer, that Paul was referring to unbelievers. In fact, growing up, I heard messages preached along this line that suggested that Paul was referring to unbelievers. But look at what he says again: “Mark this: People will become lovers of themselves, lovers of money and so forth in the last days.” Now are unbelievers becoming these things? No, they are already these things. They are already lovers of themselves. They are already boastful. They are already unforgiving. They are already disobedient to parents. And that’s why we properly refer to them as unbelievers. Is that not true? So, they are not becoming these things. They are already these things.

Paul, then, cannot be referring to them. Conversely, he is referring to believers. They are the ones that can become these things. Because of the times, they can become these things. And he further tells us that they will have a form of godliness, that is, an appearance of godliness. That means they also are going to be involved in doing most of the things that godly people are doing. They are going to be praying in the name of Jesus. They are going to have personal bibles. They are going to be attending bible study meetings. They are going to be attending prayer meetings. They are going to be giving tithes. They are going to be giving offerings. Some of them would have changed their names to bible names. That is what Paul means when he says that they are going to have an appearance of godliness.

However, the power of God will not be in expression in their lives. Because it takes the power of God to be godly. It takes the power of God to manifest godliness. It takes the power of God to manifest holiness. It’s not something based on mere talk. It takes God’s power, divine power, to live a godly life. It is impossible to live a godly life without God’s power. It is impossible. God’s power must be at work in you for you to live a godly life.

If His power, then, is not at work in you, it does not matter how you try to fake it, it is not going to work. You are just going to be an actor. That’s all. It’s not going to work. And the believer is told to stay away from you. So, stay away from such people. Why? They are not going to contribute to your growth. They are not going to contribute to your fruitfulness.

Now I’m saying this in advance so that you get my point and don’t misrepresent what I’m saying. The fact that I’m drawing your attention to the reality of our oneness in Christ, to the fact that we all have something to contribute to each other’s fruitfulness doesn’t mean that everyone that claims to be a Christian is in that position to help your faith or to help your growth. Do you get my point?

We’ll close here this morning. Let’s bow our heads and thank God for his word that’s come to us.

The fruit of the Spirit

Title: Prayer | FruitBearing 8

Series: Fruit bearing

Download

This morning, I want to further share with you on ‘Fruit bearing’. We have been looking at what Scriptures have to say to us about bringing forth fruit. And that’s because it is the will of God for us to bear fruit, which is referred to in scriptures as the fruit of the Spirit. On that note, we have looked at how to bear fruit. And one main instruction the Lord Jesus Christ gives us along that line is that we must abide in Him. He says, “Abide in me. Unless you abide in me, you cannot bear fruit.” He already describes our relationship with Him as that of the vine and the branches. And as branches cannot bear fruit unless they abide or remain in the vine, we cannot bear fruit unless we remain in Him.

How then do we remain in Him? One main way to remain in Him is to allow His Word to remain in us. We must give room to His Word in our lives. If we will not give room to His Word in our lives, then we will not be able to bring forth the kind of fruit He wants us to bring forth. It’s not about struggling to do this or to do that. It’s about abiding in your source. It’s about remaining connected to your source, the source of your fruitfulness.

The Lord Jesus Christ is the source of our fruitfulness. The child of God must keep that in mind. The child of God must know that. In fact, when somebody becomes a Christian, that’s the first thing he must be educated in. Otherwise, he may struggle. He may struggle in his Christian life, struggling to please God. It’s possible that even you are struggling to please God this morning. You are struggling to be the person He wants you to be. You are struggling to walk in love. You are struggling to be patient, kind, humble, gentle, self-controlled. Something is missing. What is missing is the fact that you are not abiding in your source.

You are not supposed to struggle. I’m not saying you are not to make effort. That’s not what I’m talking about. But struggling to be the person God wants you to be shouldn’t be happening in your life. And it will not be happening in your life if you are drawing from the source of your fruitfulness.

Now as I said before, one way to draw from Him is to meditate on His Word. Keep meditating on His Word. If it’s been hard for you to do certain things that He wants you to do, then, it may just be that you have not meditated long enough on what His Word says about that thing. It may just be that you have not become one with His Word as far as that thing is concerned. So, you don’t need to become discouraged. You don’t need to become disheartened. You don’t need to give up in your quest to becoming what God wants you to become. You only need to give yourself more to His Word.

Solomon says, “If you faint in the time of trouble, your strength is small.” If you don’t want to faint in the time of trouble, what do you do? You get more strength. You go for more strength. So, you need to give yourself more and more to the Word of God. It’s not a one-off thing. It cannot be a one-off thing. And that’s one of the reasons Jesus says, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” (Cf. Proverbs 24:10; Matthew 4:4)

Interestingly, Jesus, when He said that, was quoting Moses. It was Moses that first said, “Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.” That means the word of God is your very life; you have no life apart from the word of God. Thus, the word of God is not something you give attention to once in a while or when you feel like doing so. The word of God is something you must daily give attention to. It’s something you must every moment give attention to. (Cf. Deuteronomy 8:3)
So, you must labor to know everything the word of God says about you, about how to live to please God, about how to walk in the light of His presence. You must give yourself to knowing this. You will not know these things automatically. You will have to give yourself to learning from Scriptures what they say about you.

Even Jesus Christ had to do that. Even Jesus had to give Himself to Scriptures. And everything He did was based on what Scriptures said about Him. Even when He was going to describe the life He lived to His disciples after His resurrection, the Bible says He took them to the Scriptures, beginning with Moses, to show them that everything that happened to Him was consistent with what is in Scriptures. (Cf. Luke 24:25-27)

If Jesus Christ had to live like that, in order to live a life that was well pleasing to God, don’t think you can do otherwise and live a life that is well pleasing to God. It is not going to work. So, you must be prepared to give yourself to the word of God every day, every moment, if you are going to bring forth the kind of fruit He wants your life to bring forth.

Then you must also learn to express your dependence in God. Don’t forget Jesus says, “Apart from me you can do nothing.” That means it is impossible for you to do anything that will please God apart from Him. Again, as I pointed out before, you may do some things apart from Him. You may have been doing a lot of things apart from Him. And there are many people today in the world that are doing all kinds of things apart from him. But the day is coming when they are going to realize that everything they have done apart from Him is nothing. It will be summed up as nothing. It will have no praise from God.

See, for God, it is not just for us to get involved in all kinds of activities — God is also interested in what is motivating those activities. He is also interested in where we are drawing the strength to carry out those activities. So, if you have agreed that apart from Him you cannot do anything, that apart from Him you cannot bear the fruit He wants you to bear, be the person He wants you to be or do the things He wants you to do, then you must learn to express your dependence in Him.

How? Through prayer! I have been talking about drawing from your source in order to live the kind of life God wants you to live. And this is of course something you must be interested in doing. I can’t remember the number of times I have said that while sharing with us in this series. You must want what God wants for you. You must desire to be what God wants you to be. If you don’t desire to be what God wants you to be, it is not going to happen. And the scriptures are abundantly clear about that. God is not going to force you to be the person he wants you to be or to have whatever it is that He wants you to have. You must want to have what He wants you to have. You must want to be what He wants you to be. Because that’s one of the things that will motivate you to go in the right direction.

So, do you want to bear fruit? Do you want to bear the fruit of the Spirit that Christ speaks about, the fruit of love, joy, peace, faith, self-control, patience, humility, gentleness, brotherly kindness and generosity? Do you want to bear much fruit? If you want to, then, you must also be willing to draw strength from the one, the only one that can make it happen. You must be willing to draw wisdom, understand or whatever it is that you may need from the only one that can make it happen.

Therefore, you must be willing to pray. You must be devoted to prayer. You can’t bear the kind of fruit God wants you to be abundantly if you are not devoted to prayer. That’s because there are forces in this life that are working against you. There are forces in this life that do not want you to bear fruit. There are forces that do not want you to be the person God wants you to be. The Word of God is very clear about that. It says that we are in a struggle, we are wrestling, not with human beings but with demons. And you better keep that in mind.

There are people who don’t believe in the supernatural, of course. And that’s unfortunate. Because the supernatural is all around them. There are people who don’t believe in the existence of Satan or in the existence of demons. And that’s unfortunate again because Satan and demons are all around you. Demons are all around us. And I am not saying that to make you afraid. That is because just as demons are all around us, we also have angels all around us. They are coexisting. We too are coexisting with them. They are our neighbors. I’m telling you. Demons are your neighbors. There’s nothing you can do about that, just as angels are your neighbors. They are all around us. (Cf. Ephesians 6:12)

Well, the word of God says we are in a struggle with them. And that’s why we have to be strengthened every moment. We have to be strong every moment. For us to be the persons God wants us to be, for us to live the kind of life He wants us to live, we have to be strong. We cannot afford to be weak. We cannot afford to be feeble. And to access strength, we must be given to prayer. Strength is available in God. You must understand that. Wisdom is available in God. Everything we need is already present in Christ. And since we are in Him, we have access to everything we need. That’s what the word of God tells us. We have access to His fullness.

Paul is talking about this in Colossians chapter 2 when he says you have been given fullness in Christ. It means we have access to His fullness, the fullness of His life. But the point is that we don’t always take advantage of His fullness. It’s something we have to learn to do. If we all are daily taking advantage of His fullness, our lives would have been a lot better.

Now this goes beyond just confessing it. This, of course, again is where certain Christians are missing things. They confess the word of God. And that’s good. They confess the fact that they have been given fullness in Christ. But see, your confession of the fullness of Christ is just a declaration of the truth. It’s not your confession that will make what has happened true. What has happened has already happened. The fullness of Christ is already yours. Your confession of it is not going to make it any more yours, because it is already yours.

Fine, it is good to confess what God says. It’s so that your spirit can agree with that reality. But what has happened has already happened. What ‘is’ is already is. It’s not your confession of it that is going to make it more real. So, confession is just confession. A confession of the truth is just a confession of the truth. You must apply the truth for it to work. If you don’t apply the truth, the truth will not work.

You see, if you don’t take steps on the basis of the truth you know, the truth will not automatically work. Jesus says you will know the truth and the truth will make you free. That is the reality. But for the truth to make you free, you must act on it. Today you have access to the fullness of Christ. You must take advantage of the access that you have to His fullness. And I’m saying that one of the ways to take advantage of your access to His fullness is being devoted to prayer.

So, if you find that certain fruit of the spirit is not manifesting in your life, apart from meditating on what the word of God says about that fruit of the spirit, you must also pray for the manifestation of that fruit in your life. That is because it is supposed to be manifesting in your life. Now this is what James is talking about. Look at James chapter 1, from verse 5, which says:

“If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.” (NIV)

Did you see that? It says, “If any of you lacks wisdom.” Now of course, some Christians have problems with this. They believe that James is not reasoning like a New Testament preacher. Why? It’s because Paul says Christ Jesus has already been made wisdom unto us. So, they think that this is conflicting, that the reasoning of the Christian or of the New Testament believer should be that wisdom is already his. And it is true. Wisdom is already yours. Wisdom is already yours in Christ. Christ has been given to us as wisdom from God. He is our wisdom. (Cf. 1Corinthians 1:30)

But the question is, “Do you always manifest that wisdom?” The things you say, are they always words of wisdom? The decisions you make, have they always been decisions of wisdom? The week just ended yesterday. All the decisions you made last week, were they decisions of wisdom? All the steps you took last week, were they steps of wisdom? All the words you spoke last week, were they words of wisdom? You took last week. Were those types of wisdom? Can you confidently tell yourself that everything you did last week was wisdom-based or wisdom-motivated? If it is not so, then something is wrong with your understanding of Scriptures or your application of it.

Look, the fact that the word of God says that Christ has been made to us wisdom doesn’t mean that we are always walking in wisdom. What the word of God wants us to know is that wisdom has been made available to us in Christ Jesus. But we must not know how to access that wisdom. We must know how to access it and utilize it. Otherwise, even though we have access to wisdom, we are going to be doing foolish things.

There are many believers that are doing foolish things; they are continually taking silly steps. It’s not because wisdom is not available to them. It is simply that they are not taking advantage of it or they have not learned how to take advantage of it.

So, James is not saying something contradictory to what Paul says. James is only showing us how to access the wisdom that is already ours. And he says, “If you lack wisdom, if you can see that you are making foolish decisions, that the decisions that you are taking, they are not moving your life forward, what should you do? Talk to God about it.”

Or if you find yourself in a situation and you don’t know exactly what to do. It’s not every time that we don’t know exactly what to do. That’s because the wisdom of God is already present in our lives. But you know, there are times that we come in contact with certain situations and we don’t know exactly how to handle them. You are asking yourself: “What do I say here? How do I decide here? What step do I take here?” You don’t know.

Now you don’t sit down, worried about the situation. That won’t work. You don’t pace the floor, trying to wrap your mind around the situation. Sometimes that may work; there are times that it may not work. Because, of course, if wisdom will be operational in your life, you must learn to think. The word of God also tells us that wisdom will not always readily work in us, if we are not going to use our head. The reason God has given you that mind to think is so that you can think; it’s not so that somebody can do your thinking for you. Yes, of course, you may employ people to do your thinking for you; that’s good business. People do that all the time, employ people to do their thinking for them so that they can think. That’s even thinking on its own, to know that you can employ people to do your thinking for you in certain areas of life.

Well, we are saying that if wisdom will work, you must think, because it is as you think that wisdom is released. When you read the books of Solomon, you will find things like ‘I ponder’, ‘I think,’ ‘I consider’. So even though God blessed Solomon with wisdom, wisdom wasn’t just naturally or automatically manifesting in his life; the man had to use his head for the thing to work.

But even if you are using your head, there are times you still won’t know what to do. You will think and think until you are probably wanting to have a brain damage. Then you can tell that your brain is tired or exhausted. Yet your problem is not solved. What should you do? Pray to God for the needed wisdom!

I said all of that to draw your attention to something, because what James is speaking about here is not applicable to accessing wisdom alone. There’s a principle there that can be widely applied. The word is: “If any of you lacks something.” It may be anything. In this case, he’s speaking about wisdom. But what you lack may not be wisdom. What is not finding expression in your life may not be wisdom. It may be joy that is not finding expression in your life. It may be love. It may be gentleness. It may be humility. It may be self-control. You know from the word of God that this thing is meant to be finding expression in your life, but it is not. What should you do? You pray.

Maybe you have found yourself caustic. People can’t interact with you without getting hurt, without getting injured. There are people like that. Even though they are Christians and attend church meetings, you cannot have a normal interaction with them without getting hurt. They will say something that will hurt you. They will just do something that will hurt you. If you live with them from morning till evening, they will have hurt you a number of times before the close of the day.

If you are like that, something is wrong. That’s not who you are. You are acting contrary to what you are and you need to accept the fact that you are already acting contrary to what you are. The fruit you are bearing is not the fruit God wants to see. And you don’t have to be making excuses for yourself. But you can be doing that. You may not confront yourself with the truth about what is happening in your life, which is contrary to the will of God. You may say, “I’m just who I am. I can’t change.”

See, if you want to make an excuse for yourself for possessing a bad habit, you will have an excuse to make for it. If you want to make an excuse for being impatient, you will have an excuse for being impatient. If you want to make an excuse for having a short fuse, you will have on. At the slightest provocation, you get angry, you get upset, you are shouting, you are screaming at somebody. You can say that’s how you are in your family. You can say it’s just that I don’t like people being cheated. You can say that. You know it’s an excuse. I can’t just tolerate anybody cheating on me. That’s your excuse for having a short fuse.

But the truth is it’s not acceptable. And once you don’t agree that it’s not acceptable, you are not going to deal with it. But when you agree that it’s not acceptable and say, “I cannot continue like this, getting angry every minute. I cannot continue like this,” what do you do? You go and pray. That is because the strength to be patient with people is available in Christ.
Perhaps those around you think of you as loveless or as unfeeling. That’s because it’s just obvious that you are unkind to those around you. The child of God cannot have that kind of reputation. You cannot have the reputation of being unkind. But that may at the moment be your reputation. You’re unkind. You’re unfeeling. What are you going to do about that?

First, of course, you must meditate on the Word of God, what the Word of God says about relating to people. The Word of God already tells us to live a life of love. And the Word of God has shown us that we can live a life of love. The Word of God says God, by His Spirit, has poured His love into our hearts. Romans 5, verse 5, says, “God has shed abroad His love into our hearts.” So, the love of God is in your heart, if you’re a child of God. It is there, resident in your heart. Your life may not manifest it. Your words may not show it. Your look may not even show. But His love is in your heart already.

To say the fact, there’s a look of love. Some Christians don’t have. There is still some wildness in their look. Somebody may be wild before becoming a Christian. And his is one of the ways you know that the Word of God has affected some people. If you knew them when they were not Christians, you could tell that they were wild. But now that the love of God has taken charge of their lives, that wild look is no longer there.

See, if there is no love in you, there is that look that comes with it. It doesn’t matter whether you’re a man or a woman, that wild look will be there. And it’s uninviting. So, it doesn’t matter where people meet you, they will notice it. Maybe you’re an attendant in a filling station. When somebody is coming to buy fuel, and the person looks at your face and looks at the face of another attendant, he knows where to go. Can you relate?

Now the child of God cannot be like that. You can’t be wild in your look. You can’t. Because the love of God is in your heart. So, if it’s not manifesting, something is wrong. And you can’t be making excuses for not manifesting love. So, what do you do? You’ve got to pray about it. I am saying that if you lack love, you have to pray. Because you have access to love, the love of God. You will only need to pray about it. And it will begin to manifest in your life.

Why are you praying about it? You are praying about it because you have realized that apart from Christ Jesus you cannot manifest love. You have realized that apart from Him, you cannot manifest any fruit of the Spirit. And you want to manifest all the fruit of the Spirit spoken of in Scriptures. So, you talk to Him. You express your dependence in Him by talking to him. You will say, “I want to see this manifestation in my life. You have told me that you have poured out your love into my heart. Now I want to see that love in expression. Fill me with the strength to love. Fill me with the strength to be patient. Fill me with the strength to be humble.” And He will answer you.

Really, it takes strength to do these things, spiritual strength. And you have to draw that strength from Him. But it cannot be a one-off. There are things that told to do in scriptures that are not one-off. It’s not that you do it today and you don’t do it tomorrow. It’s not that you do it for one week and you don’t do it again. You have to do these things all the time.

For instance, how often should you meditate on the word of God? The bible says, “Day and night!” You know what that means? It means all the time. It means when you’re walking in the street, you’re meditating on His word. It means when you sit at the meal table, you’re meditating on His word. Every little chance you get, you meditate on the word of God. You are talking the word to yourself. You are thinking the word to yourself. There must be a commitment to it. Otherwise, the word of God will not find expression in your life.

The same thing goes with praying. We are taught to pray without ceasing. You know what that means? It means praying all the time. It’s not something you reserve for church meetings. It’s not something you reserve for your family prayer time. It is something you do all the time. I try to do that all the time. I’ve not gotten to where I want to be yet. But I want to get there. So, I give myself to praying all the time. And I’m telling you that it is beneficial. But it’s not something you do for one year and stop. This is what you do all your life. Because doing it is what is going to take you to where God wants you to be.

You may not be there today. You may not even be there tomorrow. You may not even be there next year. But you can be there. You can be that person He wants you to be, that man that He wants you to be, that woman that He wants you to be, that husband or wife that He wants you to be, that citizen of your country that He wants you to be. You can be it. But it’s going to be a lifetime devotion. You’re making a lifetime commitment to doing these things.

So, you’re praying without ceasing. You’re drawing from Him without ceasing. Walking in the streets, you’re praying and talking to God. You sit at a table, you’re talking to God. Because as matters of life are coming to you, you’re talking to Him about them. And it will not be long before those around you begin to feel it. And regardless of the forces that come against you, if you are like that, they cannot win. They cannot overcome you. Yes, at some point, you may feel like they’re going to overcome you. But they are not going to overcome you. They are not going to win. They are not going to defeat you.

The bible says those who hope in Him will have their strength renewed. Those who are constantly expressing their dependence on God will always have their strength renewed. They will always have access to the needed wisdom, to the needed understanding, to the needed strength, to the needed boldness.

But this is not for the lazy. The Christian life is not for the lazy. It is hard work. And you have to be willing to do the hard work. But see, there’s nothing you want to do that is harder than what Jesus Christ has already done for you. He has accomplished what God needed Him to accomplish for us. Our own is to access and enjoy what He has already done for us. So, if you are determined to access and enjoy what He has done for you, then, be ready to do that hard work of accessing it.

Let’s spend some time to pray this morning.

The fruit of the Spirit

Title: Meditating on His word|FruitBearing 7

Series: Fruit bearing

Download

This morning, I want further share with you on ‘Fruit bearing’. We have been looking at the need for us to be fruit bearing believers in Christ Jesus. God, as we see in scriptures, wants us to bear fruit. That’s because it brings Him glory when we do so. And we have looked at the nature of fruit He wants us to bear. This is referred to in scriptures as the fruit of the Spirit.

But we are not likely to bear fruit as He expects us to if it is not our desire to do so. As I’ve told us again and again, we must desire what God desires for us. We must want what He wants for us. We must not assume that we are going to become the persons God wants us to become automatically. If we do not want to become the persons He wants us to become, we will most likely not become the persons He wants us to become. If we do not want to have what He wants us to have, there is a possibility that we are going to end up not having what He wants us to have. So, we must desire to bear fruit as He wants us to bear fruit.

Now of course, as we see in scriptures also, God has not left us to ourselves in this matter. He is at work in us to will and to act according to His good purpose. God is at work in us to fill us with desires that are consistent with His good purpose and to also enable us to realize those desires. But we must not quench those desires. We are told not to quench the Spirit (1Thessalonians 5:19). You know what that means? It means to silence the Spirit of God. He is talking to you. He is telling you what to do. You can silence Him. You can tell Him to keep quiet. You can tell Him that what He is doing is too much.

As a child of God, if you are indeed a child of God, it is His job to fill you with those desires that are consistent with His good purpose. And God is never remiss in handling His jobs. He is never remiss in handling His responsibilities. So, surely, He will fill you with desires that are in line with His good purpose. But you can quench those desires. You can decide not to work with them. You can decide to eliminate them. You can decide to ignore them. And you can think yourself of the number of times you have quenched those good desires that God brought to you. You can think of the recent ones, the times in which God was leading you to do something or asking you to do something and you silenced Him. You knew that what He was asking you to do was the right thing for you to do. You knew that it was good. You knew that it was righteous. You knew that it would be profitable for you and for every other person around you. Yet you did not do it. Why? That is what is called quenching the Spirit, silencing the Spirit.

Well, do not give anybody the impression that God is not giving you the will to do what is right. If He is not giving you the will to do what is right, that means He is not living in you. That is the point. If He is living in you, He will surely and continually give you the will to do what is right, to do what is in line with His purpose for you. But you will have to work with that will. Otherwise, it will amount to nothing.

In any case, what we are dealing with is ‘Fruit bearing’. And we are dealing with it because that is what God wants us to do. Then we have equally seen that apart from Him, we can do nothing. In St. John’s Gospel, chapter 15, which we have been looking at, Jesus describes our relationship with Him. He refers to himself as the vine and to us as the branches. And He tells us that as the branches cannot bear fruit by themselves without abiding in the vine. In the same vein, cannot bear fruit by ourselves without abiding in Him.

So, we already know the main secret of bringing forth fruits, the fruit of righteousness, the fruit of the Spirit, which consists in: love, joy, peace, gentleness, humility, self-control, brotherly kindness. The secret is abiding in the vine, abiding in our Lord Jesus Christ. He is our source, the source of everything God wants to produce in us. He is the source of the joy that God wants to produce in our lives. He is the source of the love that God wants to exhibit through our lives. He is the source of the humility, the gentleness, the meekness, the self-control that God wants to exhibit through our lives and in our lives. Therefore, we have to remain connected to Him.

It is not for us to struggle to be any of these things. It is not for you to struggle to love, to be patient, to be kind, to be gentle or humble. If you are struggling, something is wrong. Because you are supposed to do these things naturally. Why are you a new creation, by the way? Why have you been recreated? You have been recreated so that you will be able to do these things naturally.

So, if you are not doing them naturally, something is wrong. And you may want to ask yourself if you have not been disconnected from your source. Or you may want to ask yourself if nothing is blocking your connection to your source. Because doing these things should come to us naturally. And doing these things will come to us naturally if we abide in the vine. Branches do not struggle to bear fruit. They just bear fruit naturally. All they need to do is to remain in the vine. So, we too should bear fruit naturally. All we need to do is to remain in the vine or abide in the vine.

How then do we abide in the vine? The word of God tells us that we abide in him by allowing his words to abide in us. Let me read that verse to you again from 1 John chapter 2, verse 24:

“As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.” (NIV)

What have you heard from the beginning? The word of God! Now John says see to it that the word of God that you have heard remains in you or abide in you. If it does, if it does abide in you, then you will abide in the Son and in the Father. Simple!

So, if I want to remain connected to Him, I must allow His word to abide in me. As I pointed out last week, that goes beyond merely reading Scriptures or studying Scriptures. It also involves meditating on Scriptures, meditating on the word of God. Because the only way the word of God will abide in you is if you will meditate on it, if you will continually ponder on it. If it is not abiding in you, then, you are not meditating on it enough. You have to meditate on what the word of God says about you. You have to meditate on what the word of God says about fruit-bearing. If you want to bear any kind of fruit in abundance, then, you must meditate on what the word of God says about that thing.

It is hard work, of course. Meditating on the word of God is hard work. And this is why many of us Christians struggle with living in the light of the word of God. To continually think about what the word of God says, to set His word continually before you is hard work. To fix your gaze on what the word of God says is hard work. To fix your mind on what the word of God says is hard work. The word of God has not said it will be easy. God has not said it will be easy to meditate on the word of God. All he has told us is to meditate on His word and to do so day and night.

So, during the day, you’re thinking the word; you’re pondering on what the word of God says about you, what it says about your life, what it says about your walk with Him, what it says about your various relationships. You’re pondering on these things. In the middle of the night also, you do the same. In other words, when you wake up in the middle of the night, what should naturally come to your mind is the word of God. You wake up to wee. What should come to your mind? The word of God!

See, if you have to wake up to think about anything, what you should think about is the word of God, not your family problems, not your business problems, not your academic problems. That is worrying. That is being anxious. And it is not going to solve your problem. It may make you wake up angry. It may make you wake up bitter. It may make you wake up moody. That’s why some people wake up moody. They’ve been meditating on the wrong things. They wake up in the middle of the night to meditate on the wrong things. So, they are bound to wake up moody. Some often wake up anxious. Why do they wake up anxious? They’ve been meditating on those things that will make them anxious.

Now, of course, meditating on the word of God does not mean that all the problems surrounding you will naturally vanish. They may still be there staring you in the face. But meditating on the word of God will prepare you to handle them. It will give you the confidence you need to handle them. It will give you the wisdom you need to handle them. Meditating on the word of God will make you one with what God has said. And you see, when you become one with what He has said, you cannot act contrary to what He has said.

If you are acting contrary to what God has said, if you are living a life that is contrary to the will of God for you, the main problem is that you have not become one with what God has said. You may believe in what He has said. You may love what He has said. You may agree that what He has said is good for you. Yet it’s not working in your life. And the word has to work in your life. The word of God has to work in your life for you to produce the fruit God talks about. Paul says to the Thessalonians that he is glad that the word of God they heard is working in them (1Thessalonians 2:13). But I’m saying it’s not going to work in you until you become one with it.

Now the only way to become one with it is to meditate on it. It does not matter what your profession is. It does not matter what your job is. It does not matter what your background is. If you will meditate on the word of God, it will produce in your life the results God wants to see. You are not going to struggle to get the results produced. The word in itself is powerful enough to produce in your life what God talks about.

God spoke to Joshua along this line. Joshua was a soldier. And the only gift God had to give him was His word. Look at Joshua, chapter 1, from verse 7. God, speaking here to Joshua, says:

“Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.” (NIV)

The first thing God told him is to be strong and very courageous. And you know, when God speaks to you like that, you don’t try to be what you are told to be, because the word He has spoken to you will produce in you the strength to be what you are meant to be. I mean that if God says to you, “Be strong,” what happens to you? You become strong.

In one of the visions of Daniel that was what happened to him. The vision weakened him. The vision made him weak. So, he fell flat on his feet. And he had no strength in him to even talk. And God said to him, “Be strong now; be strong.” And what happened? He became strong. So, when God speaks to you, it’s not for you to try to be what you are meant to be. It’s for you to receive what He says, knowing that His word will produce the energy in you that is required for you to be what you are meant to be. (Cf. Daniel 10:15-19)

Well, God said to Joshua, “Be strong and very courageous.” And when God said those words to him, he became strong and courageous. And then God went on to tell him that he must be careful to keep the law that Moses had given to him. He must not turn either to the right or to the left in keeping. That means he must make no excuses for not acting on the word. He must not try to revise whatever God has said to him. Just act on it. Don’t try to revise it. Just act on it. That way you are going to be successful wherever you go.

Then look at verse 8. God, still talking to this man, says:

“Keep this book of the law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” (NIV)

Where is he to keep the book of the law? On his lips! In his mouth! Read the word. Talk the word. You understand the point now? You must keep on saying what the word says to yourself. By the way, Romans 10, verse 17, says, “Faith comes by hearing the words of Christ,” right? But it does not say whom you must hear it from. It only says faith comes by hearing the word of Christ. You can hear it from yourself, then. And you had better start hearing it from yourself.

How do you hear it from yourself? You say it to yourself. You say what the word is saying to yourself. I do that every day. I may not have done enough of it, but I am ready to do enough of it. For example, in 2 Timothy, chapter 1 verse 7, we are told that God has not given us the spirit of timidity, but the spirit of power, love, and sound mind or self-control, right? That’s the Spirit we have. Now I have to say that to myself. I have to say that God has not given me the spirit of timidity. And I say that to myself almost every day, in fact, more than once every day, that God has not given me the spirit of timidity but the Spirit of power.

Now I also have to break it down. It’s not just about quoting Scriptures. I have to break it down. The Spirit God has given me is the Spirit of power, not the spirit of weakness. So, I am not weak. I am not a weak Christian; I am a strong Christian because the Spirit of God fills me with power. Also, He has given me the Spirit of love. So, I have to tell myself, “What I have in me is love. The Spirit of God fills my life with love, not with lust but with love. So what my life will express is the love of God. Because there’s the Spirit of God in me and He’s filling my life with love.”

Then He fills my life with soundness of mind, with self-control, with self-discipline. So I am not undisciplined. I am disciplined. The Spirit of God works in me and fills my life with discipline. I have to say that to myself. You have to say that to yourself. You have to talk the word. What are you doing? You are making yourself one with the word of God. That’s how to meditate.

Again, this goes beyond memorizing scriptures. This is thinking the word of God and speaking the word of God to yourself. And you have to do this day and night. As often as it comes to your mind, you say it. You say it to yourself. You say it so that you hear it.

Now God says if you will do this day and night, you will be prosperous and successful. I’m, then, going to ask myself, “If I’m not doing this and I’m not prosperous and successful, what could be wrong?” It may mean that I’m not doing it enough. Because God says that if I do it, this will be the result: prosperity, success. And He says do it day and night. That is non-stop. It’s not a one-off thing. It’s not what you do for a week. It’s not what you do when you feel good. It is not what you do when there are no challenges staring you in the face.

It is easy to say, “My God supplies all my needs according to His riches and glory by Christ Jesus,” when your bank account is full, when you enter your kitchen and there is food everywhere. Yes, when things are going on well, you can easily say, “My God supplies all my needs according to His riches and glory by Christ Jesus.” It’s easy to say that. But you had better just know that you are thanking God where that is the case.

But to say that when your bank account is empty, to say that when there is no food in your house, that’s what we are talking about. To say these things, regardless of the circumstances that you are faced with, that’s what we are talking about. You are saying that to yourself, regardless of what you see or do not see. Regardless of what is happening in the country, you are saying to yourself, “God supplies my needs according to His generosity”. And since you have to do it non-stop, that means you have to keep on doing it until the result starts showing. You can’t quit as far as this is concerned.

I’m trying to show you why many of us believers are not bearing the fruit God wants us to bear. We think that we are going to do the right thing for a while and then stop. No! The right thing must be done all the time. The right thing must be done from start to finish. If you are going to become one with the Word of God, you must be prepared to do so from start to finish.

We are given some illustrations in Scriptures to show us that we must be committed to the Word of God in order to see their results. There are times, of course, that when God asks us to do something and we do it, the results manifest immediately. But that is not the case all the time. There are times, there are situations in which you have to consistently act on what God has said over a period of time, unspecified time, before you begin to see results. And if you are not prepared to do the Word of God for as long as you have to do it, you may not get results. In fact, there are results that will not be evident in your life.

God, for instance, spoke to Joshua about what to do to bring the walls of Jericho down. I’m asking you this because I’ve asked myself. God said you will have to go around the walls of Jericho once every day, right? For how many days? Seven days! Then, on the seventh day, they would have to go around the walls of Jericho seven times and afterwards shout.

The question is, “Could God not have brought down the walls of Jericho the first day, having made them go around it once?” Could God not have done that? Or could God not have brought down the walls of Jericho as they approached it, without these people having to march around it at all? Could God not have done that? If He could divide the Red Sea without any one of them touching it, if He could open the rivers of Jordan just by the priests stepping into it, could He, then, not bring down the walls of Jericho by Joshua merely stretching his hand towards it? He could.

Yet He did not. Instead, He told them, “You will have to march around it for seven days. And on the seventh day, you will do so seven times.” Why? It was to teach them commitment to His word and commitment to Him. It was to show them that there are things that you must do again and again and again and again in order for you to see results.

Why must Naaman dip himself inside the river Jordan seven times? Oh, someone may say, “Oh, that is because seven is the perfect number.” That’s true. But how many people had to dip themselves inside the river seven times in order for them to get well in the bible? How many people did Jesus ask, “Go and dip yourself inside the river in order to be cleansed of leprosy?”

A leprous man came to Him once and asked, “Master, if you are willing, you can make me whole.” And the Bible says Jesus touched him and said, “I’m willing; be whole.” And he was whole instantly. He didn’t have to go to any river. He didn’t have to do any washing. He was healed instantly. Right there. (Cf. Matthew 8:1-3)

Now for Jesus Christ, it didn’t matter whether it was one person or ten people. Ten came to him and said, “Master, have mercy upon us. We are suffering from leprosy.” He said, “Okay, go and show yourselves to the priests.” He didn’t say go and dip yourself inside any river. ‘Go and show yourselves to the priests’ was what He said. And on their way, they realized that they had been made whole. When were they made whole? The moment He spoke His word to them. (Cf. Luke 17:11-19)

So, if God wants to do something instantly, he can do it instantly. Right? The power to do it instantly is there. If He has to perform a thousand miracles to make that happen instantly, He would do so. Now if he is not doing it instantly, and He is asking you to follow a process, what is it teaching you? Discipline, the discipline of commitment!

What am I saying? It is that in order for us to see the benefits of the word of God in our lives, the full results of the word of God in our lives, we must be committed to it non-stop. If you are going to bring forth the fruit of the Spirit as mentioned in scriptures, love, joy, peace, contentment, humility, gentleness, self-control, patience, faith, faithfulness, then you must be prepared to meditate on the word of God non-stop.

So, if certain things are not evident in your life yet, do not worry. What you need to do is to meditate more on the word of God. Is somebody following me this morning? Don’t try to struggle to love. Don’t try to struggle to be patient. Don’t try to struggle to be humble. Don’t try to struggle to be anything that God wants you to be. You don’t have to. What you need is to draw from your source. And how do you draw from your source? You draw from your source by meditating on His word. And if you are not seeing the results yet, what must you do? You must be more committed, be more committed to His word. That means your commitment is not enough.

Solomon says if you faint in the day of adversity, your strength is small; your strength is not enough. That’s why you faint. That’s why you get tired. That’s why you get weary. Your strength is not enough. Now what are you going to do? Are you going to die there? No. What do you do? Get more strength. Strengthen yourself in the Lord. Isn’t that what we are taught to do in scriptures? We are told to be strong in the Lord and in the power of His might. Who is going to do that? I am going to do that. You are going to do that. You are going to strengthen yourself in him. How do you strengthen yourself in him? One of the ways is by meditating on his word. (Cf. Proverbs 24:10; Ephesians 6:10)

So, if you have been failing at something that God wants you to do, it’s not just for you to try harder. Are you following my point? What you need to do is to get more strength. Draw more from him. Otherwise, you are going to be frustrated. And there are frustrated Christians. They love God. They want to please Him. They want to do His will. But they keep finding themselves unable to do what He wants them to do. So, at some point, they get frustrated; they become finally tired. And at a point of their tiredness, Satan may drive them back to where they were coming from.

Some have been driven back like that, driven away. These are now saying, “Christianity is not working for me. I thought I would be able to live this Christian life. It’s not just working. God, you know I really want to. But it is not working.” So, they turn away from Him. But that’s not the solution. That’s only going to mess you up more.
What you need to do is to return to your source. Draw more from your source. If you will draw from Him, you are going to find all the strength you need, all the energy you need, all the comfort you need, all the inspiration you need to be the person He wants you to be, to do the things He wants you to do.

God said to us through Isaiah, “Those who wait on the Lord will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings as eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint.” Now waiting on him doesn’t mean sitting down in one place, waiting for Him to come. No! It goes beyond that. It means putting your reliance on Him, putting your trust in Him. That’s what it means. In other words, you stay put there. You are telling yourself, “I must keep drawing from Him. The challenges may be hot. Things may be intense. But I remain connected to him. I will keep on meditating on His word. I will keep on filling myself with His word. I may appear weak today. I may even fall or fail at some point. But see, I’m not getting discouraged. Because He says that those who wait on Him will have their strength renewed.” (Cf. Isaiah 40:31)

Who is going to renew their strength? God Himself! In other words, He will furnish them with the strength they need to go from start to finish. They will have the strength to be patient. Do you understand the point now? The one whose reliance is on God, maybe for one thing or the other, whatever it may be — that thing may not be showing up yet – but he’s going to have the strength to be patient to see the result. Yes, he will have the strength, all the strength he needs, all the energy he needs, to run and not grow weary, to walk and not faint.

So, if you feel tired in your walk of faith, you know that something is wrong. What should you do? Go for strength! That’s not the time to stop studying the word. That’s not the time to stop meditating on the word. That’s not the time to stop praying. Usually, that’s what people will do. When they get tired like that, they now stop doing everything. But that’s when to do it more. Because the one that has spoken will not fail you. He has said you will have your strength renewed. And you will surely have your strength renewed. You will have your wisdom renewed. You will have your determination renewed. Whatever it is that must be renewed in you will be renewed. So, you’re going to fly. You’re going to soar like an eagle. You will soar above those challenges. You will soar above those trials. You’re going to be on top of them. You want to be on top of those challenges. But that’s what it means to soar.

Eagles are not afraid of the wind blowing. Because they have to use the wind to rise. They’re going to use it to rise. And you’re going to use those challenges to rise. You are going to use those trials to rise. You are going to use those tribulations them to rise. They will not pull you down. They will not make you faint. They will not make you weary. They will not destroy you. You are walking in victory over them.

Let’s begin to bless the name of the Lord this morning.

Series: Fruit bearing

Last week, I gave us some Scriptures to show us that for us to bear the kind of fruit God wants us to bear, God Himself must be at work in us. God must produce in our lives what He wants to see in us. Otherwise, whatever effort we make towards becoming the persons He wants us to be is going to be an effort in futility. And that’s why Jesus tells us to abide in Him. Look at verse 4 of that chapter, St. John’s Gospel, chapter 15, again: “Remain in me, as I also remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me, you can do nothing.” (John 15:4-5NIV)

The Lord has already shown us how to bring forth the fruit of the Spirit. Yes, we have a demand on us to bring forth the fruit of the Spirit and to bring it forth abundantly. We have to bring forth love, faith, gentleness, peace, humility, self-control and brotherly affection as fruit of the Spirit or as the fruit of the life that has been recreated by God. But if we will not abide in the Lord Jesus Christ, we will not be able to bring forth this fruit. It is impossible to do so. That’s what Jesus Himself says. You have to stay connected to him. And that’s because He is our source. It is from Him that we draw life, the life of God. It is from Him that we draw strength, the strength to live as He wants us to live. Everything we need to be the people God wants us to be is in Him.

Thankfully, we have been included in Him. That’s why we talk about being in Christ: “If any man be in Christ, he is a new creation. Old things have passed away; all things have become new.” So, we are now included in Him. As the branches are included in the vine, as parts of our body are included in the body, we are now in Him. And for us to bring forth fruit, we must remain in Him; we must abide in him. Because that’s the only way to be able to produce in us what He wants to see in our lives. How, then, do we abide in Him? How do we remain in Him? He has given us our instruction, what we must do in order to bring forth fruit. But how do we do it? We know that we must abide in him. But how do we abide in him?

Now, in 1 John chapter 2, we are told something along this line, which is helpful. Look at verse 24:“As for you, see that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.” (NIV) Did you see that? As for you, in other words, as far as you are concerned, what should you do? See to it that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. What have you heard from the beginning? The word of God! Now John says, “See to it that the word of God remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in Him.”

So, if you are going to remain in Him, His word must abide in us. And this is what those who are struggling to live the Christian life don’t understand. You cannot live that life God wants you to live, if His word does not abide in you. It is impossible. See, the word of God is not something that you can do without. The word of God is your very life. So, you have to prioritize with it. You must allow it to remain in you. You must make room for it in your heart and not take lightly. If you’re going to remain in Him, that’s what must happen. His word must remain in you.

And think about it because these are figures of speech. So we’re going to use things that we can understand to illustrate them. If you’re in a relationship with somebody, for instance, what is going to strengthen or maintain that relationship? Communication, right? And it is not just communication that will maintain it but also how seriously you take the words of each other.Let’s say we’re just dealing with friends. We want to be friends. One of the things that will tell whether our friendship will abide or not is how seriously we take the words of each other. If I tell you something about myself and you don’t take it seriously, you’re not going to act on it and relate it to me on its basis. And that will offend me. If you tell me something about yourself and I do not take it seriously, I’m not going to act on it. And that’s going to affect our friendship.

So, if our friendship will be strengthened, if it will be maintained, we must take the words of each other very seriously. Otherwise, it won’t be long before that friendship will be ruined. The same thing is applicable to a marriage relationship. What will strengthen a marriage relationship is the attitude of those in it towards the words of each other. ‘I don’t like this’ means ‘I don’t like it’. I’m not going to give it another meaning. This person has said that he does not like whatever ‘this’ is. So, I’m not going to do it because he doesn’t like it. If I don’t take it seriously, something is going to go wrong with that marriage relationship. Well, it is the same when you are dealing with a relationship with God. If we are going to stay in fellowship with Him, if our fellowship with Him will be strengthened, then, we must take whatever He says to us seriously.

Of course, we must first be willing to hear from Him. Second, when He speaks to us, we must take whatever He says to us seriously. And that’s why we are being told here by John to see to it that what we have heard from the beginning remains in us. For if it does, we also will remain in the Father and in the Son. In any case, Jesus is telling us, “Abide in me.” And it is easy to quote. But how do I abide? I must know how to abide in Him. And from what we see in scriptures, one way to abide in Him is to allow His word to abide in us.

So, I must go for His word by reading and studying it. Not only that, I must also be meditating on it. Because if His word is going to abide in me, I must meditate on it. It’s not enough to hear what He’s saying. It’s not enough to read what He’s saying. It is not enough to study what He’s saying. I must also ruminate on what He’s saying. I must meditate on what He’s saying. It is what I meditate on that will be a part of me.

Now think about it. The things that we think about all the time, they are the things that become part of us. If you’re thinking about doing something, if you want to do something, you keep thinking about it, saying to yourself, “I must do this; I must do this.” What happens? You don’t forget to do it. Because all along, maybe a whole day, you are thinking about the same thing. So, you find yourself doing it. Because that’s what you’ve been thinking about. If you want to travel tomorrow, for instance, what happens? You start thinking about it. I’m going to travel tomorrow.

Every now and then you think about it. You think about the money you’re going to spend. You think about the people you’re going to meet there, right? You think about the time you’re supposed to go. You think about the things you’re supposed to take along. So, when you wake up, you’re driven to travel, right? And unless something happens that prevents you from doing so, you will make that journey. So, if the word of God is going to remain in us, we must think and think and think and think about it.

Otherwise, it doesn’t settle in us. And if it does not settle in us, we are not going to act on it. Acting on it is what is going to produce fruit in our lives. But if we are not meditating on it, it won’t become a part of us so that we’ll act on it.I want to show you a scripture, which is Psalm 1. Psalm 1 is a popular one. And from verse 1 it says:

I want to quickly further share with us on fruit bearing. We have been looking at the need for us to bear fruit. And that is because it is the will of God for us to do so. It pleases God when his children bear much fruit. Then we looked at the nature of fruit God wants us to bear.

And from what we see in scriptures, He wants us to bear the fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, faithfulness, self-control, meekness, gentleness, humility, brotherly kindness. God wants us to bring forth these things as fruits. And we can bring forth these things as fruit because of our relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ. Remember that He tells us that He is the vine and we are the branches. Because of that, we can bring forth fruits that are consistent with His character, fruits that are consistent with His nature.

But then, as I pointed out to us, bringing forth fruit in this sense is not something that we should struggle to do. When we struggle to bring forth the kind of fruit God wants us to bring forth, we show that we do not understand how to do so. We should not struggle to love. We should not struggle to be patient. We should not struggle to be humble, kind, gentle, self-controlled. We shouldn’t struggle to be any of these things. That’s because we were created to be these things. But as I said, we’re going to struggle, if we do not know how. So, we must know how.

Now, of course, it’s not enough to know how. We must apply the knowledge that we possess. Knowledge that is not utilized is useless. People often say knowledge is power. But that is only true to the extent that knowledge is appropriately and adequately applied. Of course, it also depends on the kind of knowledge you are dealing with. But knowledge in itself will not produce power. Knowledge in itself will not change anybody’s life. It has to be appropriately and adequately utilized.

So, as we hear the word of God, we must make up our minds to appropriately and adequately utilize what we are hearing. It is something that our hearts must be after doing. Otherwise, the knowledge of the word of God that we are receiving will prove to be useless to us, even though it is not meant to be.Well, on bringing forth fruit, our Lord Jesus Christ makes it abundantly clear to us that apart from Him it is impossible for us to do so.

Let’s go back to St. John’s Gospel, chapter 15. I’ll read the passage to you again very quickly, that is, from verse 1:“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. “I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.” (John 15:1-5NIV)

You can see that how to bear fruit is plainly stated here. We must abide in Him. We must remain in Him, that is, in the Lord Jesus Christ. Why? The reason is that He is our source. He is the source of everything God wants us to be. He is the source of the fruit that our lives are expected to bear.

Everything is coming to us from him.Remember I read to you from 2 Corinthians 5, verse 18, the other time. There Paul says all things are of God, the God who reconciled us to Himself in Christ Jesus. Everything, everything that we need is from Him. And we must receive it from Him. If we will not receive from Him, we will not be able to live the kind of life He wants us to live; we will not be able to do the things He wants us to do.

So, Jesus here says you have to abide in me. We are going to later look at how to abide in Him or what it means to abide in Him. But first, we must keep it in mind that we must abide in Him, if we are going to bring forth the kind of fruit He wants our lives to bring forth. Then He goes on to say how important it is for us to abide in him. He says apart from me you can do nothing. You can’t.

It is impossible. You may try to be the person God wants you to be apart from Him. But you can only fail. And this is one of the reasons we must take Him very seriously; we must take our relationship with Him very seriously. Now, of course, we must understand that this is how Jesus Christ Himself functioned when He was here on earth. Jesus knew that God was His source and that apart from Him there was nothing He could do. So, He totally relied on God to be the person He was meant to be.

We read scriptures, and we admire the life that Jesus lived. We read scriptures and we get to admire the way He talked, the way He answered questions, the way He preached, the way He ministered to people. But how was Jesus able to live like that? How was he able to live a life that won God’s approval? God, at least, as we have recorded in Scriptures, twice testified about Him, saying, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” God was utterly pleased with Jesus. He was pleased with the life that Jesus lived. That means everything He did pleased God. So, Jesus Christ stands before us as a perfect example of man as God would want man to be. Jesus did not walk the face of this earth living as God.

Of course, He is fully God, just as He is fully man. But He did not walk the face of the earth to live as God. Rather He walked the face of the earth to live as man. Truly He came to show us who God is. But in living, He lived as man. He showed us man as God would want man to be. How was he able to do that? He was able to do that by drawing from God.

Look at St. John’s Gospel, chapter 5, Verse 19: “Jesus gave them this answer: “Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does, the Son also does. For the Father loves the Son and shows him all he does. Yes, and he will show him even greater works than these, so that you will be amazed.”” (John 5:19-20NIV)

The first thing Jesus says here, responding to what the Jews were saying about him, is that the Son can do nothing by Himself, except what He sees His Father doing. This is Jesus’ own testimony: I can do nothing by myself; I do only what I see my Father doing. So, Jesus Christ was drawing from the Father. The life that He lived, He lived it on the basis of His relationship with the Father. He said, “The Father loves the Son and shows Him what He does.

So, He’s saying, “God is teaching me how to live; God is teaching me how to walk. The things I’m doing, I’m not doing them because I just want to do them. They are the things that I learnt from my Father.” Think about that. That’s powerful. The point is that Jesus learnt how to love from the Father. He learnt patience from the Father. He learnt perseverance from the Father. He learnt humility from the Father.

Self-control, He learnt it from Him. All the things He did, He learnt them from the Father. The healing of the sick, the raising of the dead, He learnt these things from the Father. He says, “The Father is working. He’s showing me how to do these things. So, I’m doing what I see Him do.” In fact, He goes on to say, “Just as the Father gives life to the dead, the Son also gives life to the dead.” That was how he functioned.

So, we admire His life. Now if we also will be able to function the same way, we must adopt the same approach. And He’s already told us, “Apart from me, you can do nothing.” So, if you’re going to be the person God wants you to be, you must take your connection, your relationship with Him very seriously; you must see Him as your source. And you don’t just see Him as your source, you must be willing to draw from Him; you must be willing to learn from Him.Are you even interested in that? Because it begins with interest.

Are you interested in being the person He wants you to be? Are you interested in living the life that He wants you to live? Are you? You have to be interested. Then you have to be determined. But then, you must understand, it goes beyond being interested and being determined. He has to furnish you with all that you need to live the life that He wants you to live.

I want to continue where we left off on fruit bearing. We have been talking to ourselves about the need for us to bring forth fruit as believers in Christ Jesus. That’s because God has created us to do so. We see in scriptures that it brings Him glory when we bring forth fruit. And we also see that we have a relationship with Him that places us in a position where we can bring forth fruit. So, as believers we must make a business of bringing forth fruit. But then, we need to know what nature of fruit we are expected to bring forth.

Yes, the word of God shows us that God has chosen and appointed us to bring forth fruit. But if we do not know the nature of fruit He expects us to bring forth, we may find ourselves coming behind in doing so. Fortunately for us, He has not left us in the dark as to the nature of fruit He expects us to bring forth. Since He describes our relationship with Him as that of the vine and its branches, we know that the sort of fruit He expects us to bring forth has to do with our relationship with Him.

In other words, we have to bring forth the fruit of His character.Remember, we went through a number of scriptures showing us the nature of fruit God expects us to bring forth. It’s referred to in Galatians 5 as the fruit of the Spirit. In Ephesians 5, it’s referred to as the fruit of righteousness. And Peter also has a number of things to say to us about bringing forth fruit that is consistent with the character of God.A question was asked last week as to why believers don’t bring forth fruit at all or as they ought to. And I said we are going to consider that. Though I shared some things along that line in answering the question, but I did say that we will look at why it is so and deal with it as we progress in this study.

So, we are going to be doing that this morning. Now, as we consider this, we will see why believers, even though they are believers, may not bring forth fruit that is consistent with the character of God. As I have consistently said, and that is the consistent position of the scriptures as well, the fruit God wants us to bring forth has to do with godly character, exhibiting godly character. He wants us to bring forth: love, patience, endurance, gentleness, meekness, brotherly kindness, self-control, and faithfulness as fruit. And that is because all these things are consistent with the character of God. These are the things that we see in God. What will be seen in us or what should be seen in us, then, should not be different from what is seen in God.

Peter says that we have received His divine nature. That means we are partakers of his divine nature. So, we should not be struggling to exhibit godly character. We should not. If we find ourselves struggling to exhibit godly character, it must mean that something is wrong. It is either we do not have that relationship with Him that will make it possible for us to naturally exhibit godly character or something is affecting our ability to exhibit godly character. And we will not consider this, if it is not on our mind that we ought to be bringing forth fruit. It has to be on your mind that God expects you to bring forth fruit, that you are expected to bring forth fruit.

If it is not on your mind, it will not be a matter of concern to you. There are many believers that it is not a matter of concern to them that they are not exhibiting godly character. They don’t even have time to think about the fact that they are not exhibiting godly character. That’s a problem. That’s a very big problem.Peter says when you are like that, it’s either you have not been saved at all or have forgotten that you have been saved (2Peter 1:9).

If you have been saved indeed, if you have become a part of the vine indeed, then, you are supposed to be exhibiting godly character. And if you are not, you should be concerned. If you are finding it difficult to love or to walk in love, you should be concerned. If you find it hard to forgive people, you should be concerned. If it is difficult for you to demonstrate humility, gentleness or to be faithful, you should be concerned. And you will be concerned if you are a true child of God. Because you know that something is wrong with you.

It shows that your life is not going in the right direction, the direction that God expects it to go.If you are concerned about seeing your life go in the direction that God wants it to go, and your life is not going in that direction, you are going to be concerned. And you will want to do something about it. You may not know what to do about it, but you will want to do something about it.The Lord clearly shows us how to bring forth fruit. He has already told us what God expects of us. But He doesn’t stop at telling us what God expects of us; He also goes on to show us how to fulfill the demands of God on our lives. So, I have to be interested in knowing God’s demands on my life and also in fulfilling them. If I’m not interested, there is a problem.

In fact, my so-called being born again is debatable. Because when you become born again, one of the things that will show that you have indeed become born again is your eagerness for God.Now remember that Ezekiel tells us in a prophecy that God is going to remove from us the heart of stone and put in us instead the heart of flesh. That’s just figurative. And it is to show us that there is going to be a change on the inside. So, being born again results in a change on the inside. You are changed within. You are no longer what you used to be within. Now the change is not outward, to begin with.

The change is inward to begin with. And at some point, the change that has occurred inward will begin to find expression outwardly. But that change must happen. And if it has happened, then, your passions will change; your desires will change; what you are eager for will change. (Cf. Ezekiel 36:26)

All this is why I have often found it hard to believe that somebody is a Christian, if the person is not eager for God. From time to time, people in meetings will raise their hands to say that they want to become born again. Maybe because they have been touched by a message.

And then, the following day, they don’t want to show up in a church meeting. Or for the next two weeks or for the next one month, they don’t want to have anything to do with the bible. They don’t want to have anything to do with a believers’ meeting. I mean, how do you explain that? It is not consistent with what they claim to have happened to them. Something is wrong. I’m not talking about outwardly demonstrating godliness in all ways readily. That’s not what I’m talking about.

But at least, if there has been a change, if a change has occurred within, you become eager for God. You may not know how to go about living your life. You may not know how to go about setting your life right. A lot of things may be wrong with your life at that point of becoming born again. And you may not know how to fix those things. But within you, you know that God has changed you. And you are going to be eager for him, knowing that he is going to set right everything that is out of place in your life. But you say that you have become born again. And when they tell you about showing up in church meetings, you don’t want to show up in them.

They tell you about reading the bible, but you don’t want to read it. They talk to you about praying, but you don’t want to pray. And you want to continue living your life the way you have been living it.Now Paul says how is that agreeable? Or how does that agree with what you claim to have occurred to you? He says how do we continue in sin and say that grace should abound? How can we just continue to live as though nothing had happened to us? It’s impossible. If there has been a change indeed, then, it is going to reflect in our attitude towards God. (Cf. Romans 6:1)I said all that just to draw your attention to what Jesus has to say to us about how to bring forth fruit.

So, let’s go back to St. John’s Gospel, Chapter 15. From verse 1:“I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener.

I want to further share with us on bearing fruit. We have seen from scriptures that God wants us to bear fruit. He wants us to bear fruit because doing so brings Him glory. He wants us to bear fruit because that is what He has recreated us for. And He wants us to bear fruit because we have a relationship with Him that puts us in a position where we can bring forth fruit.

Then we proceeded in our last teaching to look at the nature of fruit or to begin to look at the nature of fruit, the kind of fruit God wants us to bear. That is because it’s important that we know God’s expectations on our lives. We need to know what He is expecting of us. Otherwise, we cannot live lives that are pleasing to him. We may tell ourselves that we are trying to please Him. We may tell ourselves that we are making effort to please Him. And we may tell ourselves that we actually love to please Him. But if we do not know His expectations on us, we can only be trying. And our trying will ultimately not accomplish His will. So, we need to know what God expects of us.

Since God wants us to bear fruit, much fruit for that matter, we need to know what sort of fruit He wants us to bear. And I told us that bearing fruit in this sense has nothing to do with preaching the good news or evangelizing our world, as some preachers will have us believe. There are preachers that think that when Jesus says, “You did not choose me, but I have chosen you and appointed you to go and bring forth fruit,” He means that we should go and be winning souls, that we should go and be bringing people into the kingdom of God.

But that is not consistent with the body of truth given to us in Scriptures. In every place where fruit bearing is mentioned in scriptures, it is talking about exhibiting godly character. It has to do with bringing forth fruit that shows that we are related to God, fruit that shows that we are connected to Him. And that’s the point Jesus is making in St. John’s Gospel, chapter 15, which we have been looking at. He refers to Himself as the vine and to us as the branches. Because we have this kind of relationship with Him, we are naturally supposed to be bringing forth fruit. And it should be the fruit of our relationship with Him.

I already gave us some scriptures to point out to us that when God speaks of bearing fruit, He is speaking about exhibiting godly character. I want to give us additional scriptures on that note this morning, beginning with Galatians chapter 5. This is a familiar passage, and some people will probably know the verses I want to read off hand. I’m going to read them, nevertheless, from verse 22:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” (Galatians 5:22NIV)

Again, there are preachers that believe that when Paul speaks about the fruit of the Spirit here, he is speaking about the fruit of the recreated human spirit. For them, it is only the recreated human spirit that can bring forth the fruit that Paul speaks of here. Now I would love to believe that. There was a time I believed that. But having considered other [similar] passages of Scriptures carefully, I just cannot accept that explanation or interpretation. That is because there are times that those who have not been recreated by God, those who are not Christians, exhibit some of these qualities. In fact, some of them exhibit some of these qualities better and more frequently than believers who have been recreated. How do you explain that?

There are unbelievers, people that we know not to be Christians, who are loving. They love. They love those around them. Yet they are not Christians. If it’s only the recreated human spirit that can bring forth this fruit, as those preachers will have us believe, then what is the explanation for the exhibiting or for the manifestation of love in an unbeliever?

Now we can say that unbelievers cannot love. I will not accept that because some of us have come in contact with unbelievers that are truly loving. And there are unbelievers that are good, good people. Paul speaks about goodness here in the text. And sometimes you may even mistake, if you do not know their background, you may mistake some unbelievers for believers. You may think that they are believers. That is because they are good. They love to help. And they are not hypocritical about it. They just love to do so.

Then we have unbelievers that are often full of joy. No sad moment with them. No dull moment with them. They are always cheerful. We equally have unbelievers that are peaceful, peace-loving. They don’t want trouble at all. And we have unbelievers that are faithful. In their workplaces, they are faithful. As students, they are faithful. In their relationship with you, they will prove themselves to be faithful. And we have unbelievers that are gentle. We have unbelievers that are self-controlled. We have unbelievers who don’t engage in all these naughty things that people engage in: sexual immorality, drunkenness and so forth. Their lives are clean, as you see them. And I’m talking about outwardly. I’m not talking about what is going on inside them.

So, if you’re saying that it’s only Christians that can bring forth this fruit, what is that explanation for such instances? Mind you, there are believers that you don’t even see these things in expression in their lives. They believe in Christ Jesus. They have been recreated. But it’s hard to say that they are believers because you cannot see these things manifesting in their lives. These things are not obvious in their lives. But these things have to be obvious. Because when we are talking about fruit-bearing, we are talking about something that is obvious. And you have to do it abundantly for it to be obvious.

A tree that is not bringing forth abundant fruit may at some point be taken as fruitless. There are times that when the fruit on the tree is scanty, you may not be able to tell that there is fruit on it at all. But you can tell a tree that is bringing forth fruit abundantly from afar. You can tell that that tree is fruitful. And remember that Jesus says, “It is to the glory of my Father that you bring forth much fruit, abundant fruit.” That means God wants these things to be obvious in our lives. And the only way they are going to be obvious is if they are in abundance. (Cf. John 15:8)

But I am saying that there are believers that these things are not evident in their lives at all, while we have unbelievers that some of these things are evident in their lives. It follows, then, that we cannot simply say that it is only Christians that can bring forth the fruits referred to here as the fruit of the Spirit by Paul. Therefore, Paul is not talking about the fruit of the recreated spirit. He is actually talking about the fruit of the Holy Spirit.

What Paul wants us to get is that these things can only be evident in people’s lives by the Spirit of God, by the working of the Spirit of God. That’s what he is talking about. Every good and perfect gift comes from above, from the Father of heavenly lights who does not change like shifting shadows. That’s what James says in his epistle, chapter 1, verse 17, right? Right? So, every good and perfect gift, any good thing that you see in anybody is from where? It is from God.

No good thing comes from the devil. That’s what you must keep in mind. There is nothing good that comes from the devil. So, if you see anything good in anybody, that good thing is from God. That good thing is a product of the activity or a produce of the activity of God in that person’s life. Now, of course, God may not have all of His way in the person’s life. But wherever the person has permitted Him, God will have His way there. And you will see His work in that person’s life.

As for the believer, God has recreated him; God is living in him. So, God wants to fully express Himself in him. He will, of course, have to permit God to do that. But that is God’s intention. That is God’s purpose. That is God’s aim, to fully express Himself in him. And that’s why, in praying for the Ephesians, Paul speaks about us being filled with the fullness of God. He’s talking about a situation in which all of God is fully finding expression in us, as it was the case with Jesus when He walked the face of this earth. (Cf. Ephesians 3:19)

But, you know, for the unbeliever, because he is not recreated, because God is not living in him, it may only be here and there that we will see or that we will be able to see manifestations of God’s activities in his life. Because he is not fully yielded to God, he doesn’t even know that he is supposed to be fully yielded to God, God may be able to produce goodness in him, but He may not be able to produce self-control in him. So, this good man may lack self-control. I hope you know what I am talking about.

Everybody says he is a good man, but he is a womanizer. Or they say that she is a giver but she gets angry easily or doesn’t forgive. The point I am making, in any case, is that any good thing that you see in anybody is of God. It is a produce of the activity of God in that person.

So, when Paul is saying that the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control, he is saying that it is through the working of the Spirit of God in people’s lives that these things become evident. So, if you have the Spirit of God in you, these are the things that will show that He is actually in you, working. And as believers, we do have the Spirit of God in us. So, these things are expected to be evident in us. These must be the fruit of our relationship with Him.

Now observe that Paul does not say the fruit of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. That would have been correct English, wouldn’t it? It would have been perfect, if he had said. But he doesn’t say that. Instead, he says the fruit of the Spirit is all these things that he mentions. That means they are all together. If the Spirit of God is in you, working in you, to will and to act according to God’s good purpose, then all these things will be evident in you. So, he refers to them as the fruit of the Spirit, not the fruits of the Spirit.

Take an orange fruit, for example. In that fruit, there are all kinds of nutrients, vitamins. And all of them are together. So, when you take that fruit, you cannot choose which of the nutrients will go into your body. Are you following my explanation? You can’t choose. If you are not going to take any of the nutrients in it, then, you are not going to take that fruit at all. But once you take that fruit, you cannot choose which of the nutrients in it will go into your body and which will not. That is because all of the nutrients will go into your body.

It’s the same thing that Paul is talking about. When the Spirit of God begins to work in us, He will produce all of these things, not one, not two. He will produce in us everything that has to do with godly character. So, I cannot make excuses for lacking in anything called godly character. I cannot make excuses for lacking in love, or for lacking in gentleness, or for lacking in peace, or for lacking in faithfulness. I cannot choose to be faithful and not loving. I cannot choose to be loving and not gentle. I cannot choose to be gentle and not meek. I cannot choose. God is saying that all of these things must find their place in me. All of these things are the fruit of the Spirit. They are together. So it’s for me to look forward, or to look out for the manifestations of these things. I need to see the manifestations of these things in my life because God is seeking to see them in manifestation in my life, all of them.

We are still dealing with the nature of fruit God wants us to bear. We need to know what God expects of us. So, we are looking at these things. In Ephesians, chapter 5, from verse 8, Paul says, “For once you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth.” (Ephesians 5:8-9NIV) Did you see that? Paul says you were once darkness but now you are light in the Lord. Observe that he doesn’t say you were once in darkness. If he had said you were once in darkness, he would have been correct. But he doesn’t say that. Instead, he says you were once darkness.

So, we were darkness. We were not just in darkness; we were darkness. We represented darkness. Our lives represented darkness. That’s what the life of every unbeliever represents. It represents darkness. If you follow darkness, you end up in destruction. That’s the point.

But remember that he says, “You were once…” That is past tense. But now he says, “You are light.” And that is in agreement with what Jesus says, right? He says you are the light of the world. So, now we are light. (Cf. Matthew 5:14)

Then Paul speaks about the fruit of light. He says the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness, and truth. What does it have to do with? It has to do with character. Does this have anything to do with preaching the good news or evangelizing the world? No! Instead, it has to do with character?

So, the point is that the Christian must make a business of exhibiting godly character. That is the most important thing for us, as far as living in this world is concerned. We must make a business of it. I must make a business of it. At the moment you may not know how to do so. At the moment you may find it hard to do so. But we all can learn. That is because we have God’s provisions for us to be able to do so. But we must first of all know that we must make a business of it. We must first of all know that this is what God is expecting of us.

Being a Christian goes beyond saying that I am a Christian. It goes beyond joining a Christian assembly. It goes beyond speaking in tongues. It goes beyond prophesying. It goes beyond praying. It goes beyond having a personal bible. Of first importance, we have to exhibit godly character. Remember that in Ephesians 2, verse 10, Paul says, “For you are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works.” You see, we were created to do good works. We were created to exhibit goodness. So, if somebody is telling you what you do is not important but what is important is what is in your heart or that you are born again, the person doesn’t understand what he is saying.

Of course, we do know from scriptures that we do not get saved by our good works. That has been made abundantly clear to us in Scriptures. Nobody gets saved because he is doing good things. Nobody gets saved because he is exhibiting godliness and all these things we are talking about. Nobody gets saved because of that. We get saved by accepting God’s offer of salvation through Christ Jesus. God worked for our salvation. He did what He had to do for us to be saved. And we get saved by accepting what He has done for our salvation. There is no other way to get saved.

So, we are not talking about getting saved by exhibiting godly character. Nobody gets saved by exhibiting godly character. Nobody is going to heaven because he is exhibiting godly character. No! You get saved by having faith in Christ Jesus. You become a citizen of the kingdom of God, of the kingdom of heaven by having faith in Christ Jesus.

However, we are saying that you have been saved for a purpose. Yes, your good works do not save you. But you were saved so that you can do good works. You were saved so that you can exhibit godly character. So, each of us has to make a business of exhibiting godly character. Each of us has to begin to look at these things that are mentioned in Scriptures about the fruit of the Spirit and begin to see to what measure they are finding expression in our lives. God is interested in this. I must be interested in it. He is interested in my fruit bearing. I must be interested in my fruit bearing.

So, the question for you this morning is, “Are you interested in your fruit bearing? Are you interested in seeing in your life those things that God wants to see in your life?” I am interested in seeing in my life those things He wants to see in my life. I am not yet seeing all of them as abundantly as I would want to see them. I am seeing some, but I know God expects more. And I want to be where He wants me to be. But I know what He expects of me. I know His demands on me. And I am going to take advantage of His grace to fulfill His demands on me. But it is important that I know His demands on me and that I am interested in seeing that His demands on me are fully accomplished. Is somebody following this?

Let me give you one more Scripture before I close. From verse 3 of 2Peter, chapter 1, he says:

“His divine power has given us everything we need for a godly life through our knowledge of Him who called us by His own glory and goodness. Through these He has given us His very great and precious promises so that through them you may participate in the divine nature, having escaped the corruption of the world caused by evil desires.” (2Peter 1:3-4NIV)

The first thing Peter tells us here is that God’s divine power has given to us everything we need for a godly life. So, everything I need for a godly life has already been delivered to me. I may not be taking advantage of everything I need. I may not even know these things that I need for a godly life. But the word of God says they have already been given to me. So, I’m not going to have any excuse for not living a godly life. That’s the point. None of us has any excuse for not living a godly life. There is no excuse.

I’ve been telling myself lately, “There is no excuse for doing anything wrong.” If I think of myself as having done something wrong, I tell myself, “Okay, so why did you do this? What excuse?” The truth is there is no excuse. As long as I keep making excuses, I’ll continue to do what is wrong. So, I need to be able to tell myself that there is no excuse for doing what is wrong. That is because the word of God says that everything I need to do what is right has been given to me. I may not know it. But it’s my job to know it. It’s my job to get myself educated in those things that God has freely given to me to live the kind of life He wants me to live. It’s my job. Or I may continue to make excuses for doing what is wrong.

Well, the word of God is clear about the fact that everything we need to live a godly life has been given to us. It goes on to tell us that we have been made partakers of the divine nature. Is that in your Bible? Does that even mean anything to you, that you are a partaker of the divine nature? You may think of yourself simply as human. But the word of God says you are a partaker of the divine nature.

One of the excuses we make [for not being what we are meant to be] is that we are humans. And it’s true we are all humans. We can’t run away from that. But we are not only humans; we are also divine. The word of God says that we are partakers of God’s divine nature. Now that’s something to meditate on. That’s something to think about, to consider its possibilities, the possibilities that are available to the one or to one who is a partaker of God’s divine nature.

What are the possibilities? If I am indeed a partaker of God’s divine nature, and I am indeed a partaker of His divine nature, what are my possibilities? What are the things I can accomplish with that? That’s something for me to meditate on. What do you think? We have to meditate on these things. We have to think about these things. What does it mean to be a partaker of God’s divine nature? Am I actually a partaker of his divine nature? I don’t look like that. I don’t look divine. Do I look divine? I don’t look divine. But the word of God says you and I are divine because we are partakers of God’s divine nature. So, I should not be using the fact that I am a human being as my excuse for not living the kind of life God wants me to live. That’s because God has already equipped me with His own nature to live the kind of life He wants me to live. He has made me divine.

Now you may not accept that. But you are not going to say that God has not told you. You say, “Oh, how can I be divine? Me, divine? What is divine about me? Yesterday I still fell ill. So, what is divine about me if I am divine? Should I fall ill at all, if I am divine?” But the word of God says that you are divine. It’s up to you to look at the possibilities, to look at the advantages, and to tell yourself, “Look, these are my advantages. These are my possibilities. Let me begin to employ them.”

Well, Peter is telling us all these things to let us know that God has fully equipped us to live the kind of life He wants us to live. Now from verse 5, Peter goes on to say, “For this reason…” What reason is he talking about? The things it just tells us. He just speaks about the fact that God has given to us everything we need for life and godliness and has made us partakers of His divine nature. Because of this, then, because you are now partakers of God’s divine nature, you are to make every effort to add to your faith goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love.

Furthermore, he says, “For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.” (2Peter 1:8NIV) What does that mean? Well, it means that because you are now partakers of God’s divine nature, make effort to bring forth these things, to add these things to your life. And he list the things we need to add to our faith in God for us, which are: goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, mutual affection and love. If these things must be obvious, you see, you are going to make effort to make them obvious. And because you now have what it takes to produce them, begin to produce them.

Now observe that Peter says if you produce them in abundance or if you have them in your life in abundance, you will not be ineffective or unproductive. Another word for ‘unproductive’ here is ‘barren’. You will not be barren. You will not be fruitless. And what are we talking about? We are talking about bearing fruit. So, when the word of God is speaking about bearing fruit or when God is telling us to bring forth fruit, He is talking about bringing forth godly attributes, exhibiting godly character. That is our main business. That is my main business. That is your main business.

Somebody has said, “We have to see to it that the main thing remains the main thing.” In your life, you too have to see to it that the main thing remains the main thing. Otherwise, what you are occupied with are irrelevancies. And what is the main thing? The main thing is for you to bring forth fruit that is consistent with righteousness, that is consistent with godly character. And you go this week, begin to do that in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Let’s bow our heads and thank God for His word this morning.

Title: God wants us to bear fruit

Last week, we began to look at ‘Fruit bearing in Christianity’. And I began to show us from scriptures that God wants those of us who are his children to bear fruit. We have reasons, of course, that He wants us to bear fruit, which are:

1. He chose and appointed us to bear fruit. We were recreated, chosen and recreated by Him to bear fruit.

2. We have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ that puts us in a position where we can bear fruit.

3. It brings God’s glory when we bear fruit.I want you to take those three things and put them in your heart. I don’t want you to forget them.

Maybe you should say these things after me: God wants us to bear fruit because He has chosen us and appointed us to bear fruit. That’s one. Two, He wants us to bear fruit because we have a relationship with Him that puts us in that position where we can bear fruit. Three, it brings Him glory when we bear fruit. Put those three things in mind. Now we rounded off by speaking about the nature of fruit that we are meant to bear. God indeed wants us to bear fruit. But what sort of fruit does He want us to bear?

Jesus, speaking to us in St. John’s Gospel Chapter 15, tells us that God wants us to bear fruit. But we need to know what sort of fruit He wants us to bear.I gave us a suggestion. I said there are preachers who believe that when Jesus says that He has chosen and appointed us to bring forth fruit, it means that we should go out and begin to preach the good news. For them, it is as we bring souls into the kingdom of God that we are bearing fruit.

While that sounds good, it is not an explanation for what Jesus says. It is not even consistent with the body of truth that we are given in Scriptures about bearing fruit.See, it is not only in St. John’s Gospel Chapter 15 that we are told something about bringing forth fruit. There are other passages of Scriptures in which we are shown that God is expecting us to bear fruit. And we are also given instructions on the nature of fruit He wants us to bear. So, before we proceed on how to bear fruit, we need to know the nature of fruit God expects us to bear. We need to know God’s expectations.

What is God expecting of us? We need to know what sort of demands God is placing on us. Yes, we have come into a relationship with Him. But we do need to know what He expects of us.Because this is often the problem with those of us who are Christians. We are, for the most part ignorant, of what God expects of us. How does God expect us to behave? How does He expect us to function? What are the things He wants us to be doing? It’s not just about talking about living to please God. It’s so easy to talk about living to please God. It’s so easy to tell somebody, “Don’t you know you ought to be living to please God?”

But how do I live to please God? What will I be doing that will make him able to say that I am pleasing God? Jesus says, “The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him.” (John 8:29NIV)

This is coming from Jesus: The one who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him. My emphasis is on ‘always’. He’s not just telling us that He does what pleases God. He also tells us the frequency. He says, “I always do what pleases Him.”Now I’ve asked myself if I too can say that. I love to say that. I want to say that.

I’m not sure I can say that at the moment, but I’m aiming for it. I want to get to a point in my walk with God that I will be able to say, “I always do what pleases you.” I want to be able to tell Him that you know that I always do what pleases you. He [Jesus} wasn’t guessing. There was no doubt about it. He knew that He always pleased God. Interestingly, God said the same thing about Him. God said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased.” That means God agreed with him that He always did what pleased him.

Now how many Christians know whether they are pleasing God or not? Can you tell if the life you are living now is pleasing God? Can you tell if the things you are doing right now are pleasing God? Is it even on your heart to please Him? It is said in Scriptures about Enoch that he had this testimony that he pleased God. Enoch had this testimony that he pleased God. The man knew that he pleased God. That must have been because he knew God’s demands. He knew what God expected of him. And we too, as believers, need to know what God expects of us. We need to know how He expects us to live. We need to know how he expects us to function. So, (Cf. Hebrews 11:5)

Well, we are talking about fruit bearing and are saying that we need to know what sort of fruit God expects us to bear. And I’m saying that it has nothing to do with soul-winning or evangelizing our world. Nothing is wrong with soul-winning. Nothing is wrong with evangelizing our world. There are scriptures that point to the fact that God wants us to be reaching out with His word to those in our world. But ultimately, the results are determined by Him.

We do our bit in preaching the word of God, day after day, week after week, month after month, year after year. But the one who determines the results is God, not human beings. And so, when Jesus is talking about fruit bearing, He’s not dealing with preaching the good news. It’s possible for you to be preaching the good news and not be bearing the kind of fruit God wants to be here. It is possible.

Yes, as I pointed out already, since we have a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ, we are put in that position where we can bear fruit. He describes that relationship as that between a vine and its branches. It follows, then, that the sort of fruit He wants us to bear is that which is consistent with His own character.

He is the vine. We are the branches, as He puts it in St. John’s Gospel chapter 15. That being the case, the kind of fruit He expects us to bear is that which is associated with who He is, that which is associated with His character. I need to give us some scriptures. Let me start with Isaiah chapter 5. From verse 1, it says:“I will sing. I will sing for the one I love a song about his vineyard. My loved one had a vineyard on a fertile east side. He dug it up and cleared it of stones and planted it with the choicest vines. He built a watchtower in it and cut out a winepress as well.

Then he looked for a crop of good grapes, but it yielded only bad fruit. Now you dwellers in Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge between me and my vineyard. What more could have been done for my vineyard than I have done for it? When I looked for good grapes, why did it yield only bad? Now I will tell you what I’m going to do to my vineyard: I will take away its edge, and it will be destroyed. I will break down its wall, and it will be trampled. I will make it a wasteland, neither pruned nor cultivated. And briers and thorns will grow there. I will command the clouds not to rain on it.

The vineyard of the Lord Almighty is the nation of Israel, and the people of Judah are the vines he delighted in. And he looked for justice, but saw bloodshed, for righteousness, but heard cries of distress.” (Isaiah 5:1-7NIV)

Now this is a passage talking about fruit bearing. It speaks of the vineyard of Isaiah’s beloved and all the things that his beloved did to take care of the vineyard.

Unfortunately, though he was looking for good fruits from the trees there, what was he getting? Bad fruits! Now, in explaining or in talking about what the vineyard and the fruits that it was bearing mean, what does he say? He refers to the vineyard as people, right? Then, in talking about the fruit, he refers to the fruit as character. He says, “I am looking for justice. But what do I see? Bloodshed! I am looking for righteousness. But what do I see? Cries of distress””So, here, when the Lord is talking about fruit bearing, it has to do with people’s conduct; it has to do with people’s character.

And as I give us some other passages of scriptures where fruit bearing is mentioned, you will see that they are consistent. Or let me say that Scriptures consistently point out that when God is speaking about fruit bearing, He’s talking about godly character; He’s talking about people’s character.

Let’s also look at St. Luke’s Gospel, Chapter 3. As a background, John the Baptist, the forerunner of our Lord Jesus Christ, came and began to preach, calling people back to God. Here are some of the things said by Luke about his ministry: “John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.” (Luke 3:7-9NIV)

Now, in preaching to the people, what did John the Baptist say? He said produce fruit in keeping with repentance. In other words, if you are coming to God, you must bring up fruit that shows that you have actually turned to God. If you call yourself a child of God, you must bring forth fruit that will show those of the world that you are indeed a child of God.If you stand before an orange tree, you don’t need to ask that tree, “Are you an orange tree or something else?” What do you need to look out for? The fruit! Jesus says a tree is recognized by its fruit.

So, if I am a child of God, I will be recognized by my fruit. And remember, in St. Matthew’s Gospel, chapter 7, speaking about false prophets, Jesus says, “By their fruit, you will recognize them.” He does not say by their preaching. He does not say by their sermons. Now we don’t recognize people as children of God through their sermons.

Yes, their sermons may give us the impression that they are children of God. But that’s not the true test. If you want to know whether someone is of God or not, you are not going to be looking at the person’s sermons.

Also, you are not going to be looking at the person’s gifts. Someone may prophesy, and the prophecy will come to pass. Now you may, on account of that, mistake that person for a child of God. But the person may not be a child of God. Someone may be working miracles. And you may mistake that person for a child of God. But the person may not be a child of God. That is because even Satan can work miracles. Satan can prophesy. (Cf. 2Thessalonians 2:9)

By the way, sometimes God can borrow people to prophesy. God can use a non-believer to prophesy to you. And the unbeliever may not even know that he is prophesying. John, speaking about one of the high priests of the time of our Lord Jesus Christ, said the man prophesied. The man said, “Is it not better for one person to die for the entire country than for the whole country to perish?” And John said that he was unconsciously prophesying when he said that.

And those listening did not even know he was prophesying. But he was prophesying about the death of Jesus Christ, how He would die to save the Jews and all mankind. Interestingly, the man himself did not even know they were prophesying. So, what happened was that God borrowed his mouth for a while and used it to prophesy. (Cf. John 11:49-52)

The point is that God can borrow people and use them to do something spiritual for a while. It does not mean that they belong to him. At least Jesus speaks about those who will come to Him on the day of judgment and say, “Did we not prophesy in your name? Did we not heal the sick in your name?” Yet He will say to them, “I do not know you.” (Cf. Matthew 7:21-23)

But how can somebody prophesy in the name of Jesus and He will still tell them, “I do not know you?” And how will someone heal the sick in the name of Jesus and yet Jesus will tell the person, “I do not know you?” Do you think Jesus will not say to Judas Iscariot, “I do not know you?” Hello? Hello? Is somebody with me?Judas Iscariot lived with Jesus. He traveled with Jesus. He slept with Jesus. He ate with Jesus. He managed Jesus’ money.

Not only that, Jesus entrusted Judas with authority to preach the good news, to heal the sick, to drive out demons. And Judas wasn’t just entrusted with that authority, he used it. He went out with others and preached the good news. He went out with others and healed the sick. He went out with others and drove out demons.

Yet the Lord referred to him as the son of perdition, right? So, guess what? With my own sanctified imagination, I am considering the fact that on the day of judgment Judas will face Jesus and say, “Lord, we did all these things together.

Do you really mean that you’re sending me to hell?” Have you ever thought about that? Do you think Judas will not try to appeal to Jesus on the basis of their relationship? Would he not say, “You called me. You chose me. Remember, I managed your money. Yes, I messed up, but are you saying that all those things that we did together did not mean anything to you?”

So, bearing fruit is not about being a good preacher. It’s not about having certain spiritual gifts or healing gifts or gifts of prophecy or gifts of speaking in diverse tongues and all of that. No. It has to do with bringing forth godly character. Now what we are dealing with is a relationship. If indeed He is the vine and we are His branches, and indeed He is the vine and we are His branches, then if we are going to bring forth fruit, the fruit we will bring forth should reflect His character, not something else.

And so, here in Luke 3, John the Baptist is saying, “Don’t just say that you are turning to God. You also need to bring forth fruit that is in keeping with repentance.” Why? As he points out, the axe is already at the root of the trees. And every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.

Personally, I love the way the people responded to John the Baptist. They did not assume that they understood what he was saying. Yes, he was speaking to them about bringing forth fruit. He said, “You need to bring forth fruit in keeping with repentance.” But they would not assume that they understood what he was talking about. So, they asked him, “What should we do then?” (Cf. Luke 3:10)

Now look at his response. He did not tell them to go and start preaching the good news. He did not tell them to go out and start winning the unbelievers and the pagans around them. What did he tell them? Look at it: “John answered, “Anyone who has two shirts should share with the one who has none, and anyone who has food should do the same.” (Luke 3:11NIV)

What is that? Goodness! If you belong to God, you bring forth the fruit of goodness; you bring forth the fruit of love. The one who has two shirts should give one to the one who does not have any, that is, if you have two. You can’t give what you don’t have. Since you have two, you can give one. John doesn’t say the one who has one should give to the one who doesn’t have any.

Instead, he says the one who has two should give one to the one who has none. That is goodness. That is a manifestation of love.Luke goes on in the next verse, saying, “Even tax collectors came to be baptized. “Teacher,” they asked, “what should we do?” “Don’t collect any more than you are required to,” he told them.” (Luke 3:12NIV)

What is he talking about? Character! Don’t extort the people. That’s what he’s saying. So, you know, when we’re talking about fruit bearing, it has to do with character, godly character. It’s not about speaking in tongues, for instance. People would not know you as belonging to God just because you speak in tongues or just because you prophesy or because you know how to pray heavens down or because you keep your bible on your desk in your office.

If you walk to any office today and see somebody with a bible on his desk, how would you feel? I mean, naturally you should feel comfortable that I’m dealing with a Christian here. So, things should be easy. But from experience, some of us have not made things easy for those who come to us for help.

To say the fact, sometimes, when you meet those who appear to be Christians, you probably will just begin to think that you’re in for trouble. But should it be like that? No! John says, “Don’t take any more than you are required to.” This has to do with character. Don’t cheat people. Don’t oppress people. That is what he is saying.

Luke goes on in verse 14, saying, “Then some soldiers asked him, “And what should we do?”” Look at the classes of people coming to him. None of them assumed that they knew what he was talking about. Each one of them wanted to know God’s demands on their lives. You understand? What should we do? What was his answer? Look at it: “He replied, “Don’t extort money and don’t accuse people falsely – be content with your pay.”” (Luke 3:14NIV)

Did you see that? Be content with your pay. What does this have to do with? It has to do with character. So, when we’re talking about bringing forth fruit, we’re talking about exhibiting godly character where we live, where we work. It’s not about talking. Yes, there’s a place of talking about Jesus. But before we’re going to be getting opportunities to talk about Jesus, there must be something that will invite people to want to know about Him, something that will want people to want to know about him.

Writing to Titus, Paul says we can make Christianity attractive. And just as we can make Christianity attractive, we can also make Christianity unappealing. Then nobody wants to hear our sermons. Whether they are going to make sense or not, they don’t even want to hear them. Because the life we are living is not appealing. What will make the life we are living appealing is our exhibition of the character of God. (Cf. Titus 2:9-10)

So, for us as believers, we must always place great emphasis on an exhibition of godly character. It’s not enough to be born again. Being born again is just, how would I put it, a means to an end. That’s the starting point. Now the idea of saying, “Oh, I’m a Christian in the heart. God sees my heart,” doesn’t work with Christianity. If what is in your heart is good, then, it will reflect in your character. If you indeed have a relationship with the Lord, then, it will reflect in the fruit that you bear.

I ask myself, “If I have a relationship with Him indeed, it should show in the fruit that I bear. It should show in the quality of life that I live. It should show in the way I talk, in the way I behave, in the way I act. It should show.” People didn’t come to Jesus just because His sermons were great. People came to Him because His character was good too. People were glad to be around Him. Look at those people that followed Him up and down, those old men and women – they were not young like that.

Why did they follow Him like that? There’s something about His character. What is it about your character? Is it appealing? Is your character appealing? Is your way of life appealing? Is your way of life attractive to those that are around you? The way you talk, is there anybody that would like to talk the way you talk? The way you react to things, is there anybody around you that would like to react to things the way you react to things? The way you conduct yourself among people, is there anybody around you that would love to do the same? Is there anybody admiring your life? That’s the point.

If no one is admiring your life, then something is wrong. What are we dealing with? We are dealing with fruit bearing. And we are talking about the nature of fruit that God wants us to bear.

Why? We have that relationship with Him. And if indeed we have that relationship with Him, then, it should show in the quality of fruit, the nature of fruits that we bear. It’s another week. What sort of fruit are you going to bear this week where you live, where you work, where you do business, where you..
